Originally published in 1904 is now available as part of the Vintage Bog Books series, using the original text and illustrations, is available on-line. I paid £11.35 for a copy and it was well worth it – an interesting read!

Some of the interesting facts I found include a statement “dogs 28lbs, and over (I hope the day is not far distant when we shall be without Whippets over that weight)” in 1904!!

In the section on Diseases – the quote “strychnine – carefully handled, of course – is of service in the nervous variety” and “ a good purgative dose, followed by small doses daily of the solution of arsenic, will greatly assist … ointment to all sores”. I wonder what the Chemist would say to me it I went in for the ingredients of some of these old remedies? :- "

I think this reprinted book is a must for all Whippeteers – this Christmas! :p

I bought my OH a copy last Christmas as he likes reading on the loo too. :- "

I've seen this book advertised but I like to know a bit about a book before I put it on my christmas list!!

I take it it's worth getting.

Depends why your buying it I suppose, my OH has non-ped racers and has a keen interest in the history of racing them. Like all old books there's going to be quirky remedies (I've got a few old Greyhound books that also recommend arsenic and such) It is interesting if your into racing though as there's a fair bit on handicapping, lure coursing and track set ups etc.

Few other good reads,

Whippets, rearing and racing by Pamela Wilson (lot of info about non-peds breeding in this)

Care of the Racing Greyhound by Linda.L.Blythe (Bible to anyone with a racing dog)

The English Whippet by E.G.Walsh

The Whippet by J.P.Moran-Healy (Both of these are good books for anyone with an interest in the breed)

The Whippet or Race Dog is a fantastic read, entertaining and well worth the few quid. I bought mine as a faximile copy at under a fiver
