could not but notice a wonder dog in northrn Ireland that can change from a under 23 lurcher to a whippet quicker than supprman can change his cape ie run at moria on saturday as a lurcher and run florence court on sunday as a whippet are there any rules reguarding ped racing in ireland and do organisers not check the breeding

no, there are no such rules and no "pedigreed" whippet racing as such; just some "gentlemen's agreement" that greyhound-whippets or dogs that are much much faster than the obviously ped whippets ought to race as small lurchers rather than as whippets. Also it might vary according to whether or not there is an under 21" lurcher/nonped race as well as as under and over 23" classes. I wasn't at Moira or Florencecourt this year so can't comment of the dog in question.

I run two KC registered ped whippets and I don't mind if the whippet that beats mine doesn't have papers if the winner isn't yards ahead, isn't running at nonped speed. But I would like to see ped whippet racing organised in Ireland; I raced one dog in an Open event in Scotland but I had to make a few trips before that in order to get the dog a racing passport and I doubt whether any other whippet in Ireland has this qualification. But then the other side of the coin is that I haven't seen any tiny whippets running in N Ireland but people who have show and coursing bred whippets might find some of their dogs a tad over height and weight restrictions and unable to compete at ped. clubs in Britain.

where were you visiting from Wonder Dog?

[We are trying to get the sporting whippet club up and running and the last thing we need is bad press the club was not involed in either of the 2 events in question but I have to say we take the oweners word on the breeding of the dog weather it is a full whippet if we know the dog to be a cross we will not let it compete we are trying not to go in the diretion of kc and non kc reg as it will cause divides in the club and the club does not have enough members yet to enter a dog knowing it to be a cross is unfair and bad sports manship

I judged the All Ireland Lurcher finals a few years ago and there was a pure whippet class and a whippet cross class. Low and behold some of the same dogs appeared in both classes! Now, to my mind there are two parties at fault here, the organiser for allowing this to happen, and the owners for either being so stupid that they don't actually know what they have on the end of the lead or just being blatant cheats! I'd like to think it was the former, but unfortunately it's sometimes just plain cheating. As a judge you can do something about it, by not letting a whippet cross win the pure whippet class, but when it comes to racing there's not a lot the competitors can do if the organisers don't make a ruling.

I'd like to think that peoples integrity would prevail, but sometimes that doesn't seem to be the case.

Only having attended Moira at the weekend I can't comment on the subject of this thread, but as chairman of The Sporting Whippet Club (NI) I can back Sammy when he says we are trying to bring organised whippet racing to NI. We'll make mistakes I'm sure, but we're trying hard to do it the RIGHT way, drawing up club rules and a code of ethics that all members have to abide by. All prospective members have to be proposed, seconded and passed at a club meeting, and everything the club does is open and transparent, there are no hidden agendas, and no one person can over rule or run the club for their own means!!! We are a small club, but our members are all of the same mindset, to promote the purebred whippet as a sporting dog, be that either the out and out hunters or the pet who can chase a lure!!
