Got talking to a colleague at work today and he drops into conversation that he and his family have had a puppy.

He tells me he's been researching for months about which breed would be better suited to his family and he's had his new addition for three weeks.

He decided on a miniature schnauzer and picked a breeder that had both parents of the puppy tested for various medical problems including eyes.

I am so pleased to hear someone take their time and think about the type of dog they would like to welcome into their families.

As Banana would say, it's all about education.

:)

Yay! Well researched, well bred pups being taken on as babies and kept for their entire lives just as it should be!

If only we could convince the people who have never made a long term plan in their life to start thinking in such terms...

It doesn't surprise me that he has researched it to be honest. He's like that at work before making a decision. It's nice to hear stories like that!

The biggest problem is how easy it is to get your hands on a puppy. If I wanted to I could ring up any number of people and arrange to meet them in a car park somewhere. That's how easy it is with the internet.

It's the 'now' culture that's nearly bancrupted our country. I can't afford it so i'll pay on credit card. I want a dog now so i'll get the cutest looking one from the net and if it has problems or gets old I can hand it to a rescue!

I think that there should be some kind of breeders licence where not only are you tested on how you look after your dog you are monitored on how you check potential owners are doing the right thing and not just buying a dog on a wim.

Problem is there of course your only punishing the 'reputable' breeders :(
