Oue large dog has a problem going to toilet. And when he does its small amonts and it is white and hard.

Any change in diet recently - has he has any bones for example? If you are concerned about constipation, pureed pumpkin can help. If you can't get that, Tesco sells frozen butternut squash which is similar. Cooked green beans can help too, or I have found a small bowl of milk helpful for my dog. But if it continues, it's always a good idea to check with your vet.

Yes, it does sound like he has been eating something, like bones. They can constipate and cause white stools.
