Hey, Archie's Mum here again!!

Thanks for all the advice on travel-sick pups, I'll go out this weekend and try to find some travel tablets.

I have another problem too - toilet troubles!!

Archie is 4 months old now, and the breeder I got him from didn't toilet train him - he was just outside in a kennel with his brother. Since we bought Archie home (6 days ago) he has hardly been to the loo outside. He pooped twice outside - just after a car journey, might have been nerves - but he wont wee outside at all.

I take him for frequent short walks, every hour for at least 10 minutes, but he'll wait til we're back home and "go" on the kitchen floor. I caught him just about to do it last night, clapped my hands and said "NO", picked him up and took him outside. He didn't go though, just held on a bit longer, waited til he was back inside and peed on the kitchen floor.

Any ideas how I can solve this problem?

I have him in kennels at my work, so I can't see if he toilets outside, but he doesn't go at all when I walk him at lunch times.

Any ideas are appreciated!!

I find with my pups they usually always go as soon as they wake up - if you take him straight out after he wakes and stay out there until he goes, then really really praise him - once he gets the idea of where to go he should be fine.

Just keep up what you did by interrupting him and then taking him outside.. and if he does pee outside give him a big 'congratulations' and maybe a treat but you have to do that immediately.

One great tip I've found; many dogs go back to the same spot to wee because of the smell and it can be really hard to shift. Soda crystals work wonders! Wash the area in a solution and even the slight smell the dogs can detect is removed!

Perseverence is going to be the key here. Whippet boys can be rather slow on the uptake, especially as he's had no real toilet training to-date. They usually catch on around 6 months, sometimes longer

Don't shout at him if he goes in the house, otherwise he'll run off and do it somewhere out of sight where he thinks he won't get told off.

You're doing the right thing taking him out every hour or so. As soon as you see him do a wee outside, say something like, 'go wees' so he associates the command with the action. You can then continue to use this command outside once he cottons on what it means. Give him heaps of praise when he does go in the right place. The keys is to make him understand what is the right place. This will take a while, so be patient. I find you need to keep reinforcing the basics for quite a while and one day it will click...usually when you lose patience and shout out ....but the training must be there first.

Definitely check out the FAQ section I pointed you in the direction of before :thumbsup: this question does come up a lot, and there are lots of previous threads there with advice on toilet training, from pups to "back-tobasics" for the older dog so I'm sure you'll find a lot of help by reading through waht's been recommended to other members :thumbsup: Good Luck with it! You'll probably find it just "clicks" one day, but as with any training it does take time and consistency :luck:

Try taking Archie out straight after he wakes up, straight after he's been playing for a while and straight after he has eaten ... basically straight after he's done anything!!! When he does have an accident in the house, say nothing and try not to react at all just take him outside and wait for a while so he can hopefully finish off what he started indoors! If he does do anything outside be sure to tell him what a very good boy he is. Don't make any fuss while you clear it up either - I think it's best if they don't even see you clean it up. There's stuff you can buy that takes away the smell so he won't associate that with being his toilet area so much.

Thanks, I'll try not to react when he has an accident indoors and clean it up when he's not around.

I'll keep you posted on the results!!

Wishing you the best with house training him. Archie will learn, give him time. I found when Bailey use to wee in the kitchen on the newspaper, when I had to clear it up, he use to help me by running off with the kleenex and when I was laying new paper down he would run off with it and rip it up, Bailey thought it was great fun (w00t) He use to watch me when I cleaned the floor waiting to pounce on my hand to get the kleenex - try and make things interesting and the advice on here is great, don't make a big deal if he does mess and put him outside as soon as he wakes up and after feeding - it won't take you long I am sure, plus he is in new surroundings :thumbsup: Good luck :luck: and look forward to hearing your update :huggles:

I just end up laughing which probably isn't the best thing to do, but he thinks he is just the cleverest boy ever! How is Twiggy getting on?

I must admit, I haven't had a whippet puppy before but I am loving every minute of it. Today I was picking up the poo in the garden and Bailey was sitting on the back door step (inside - doesn't wish to get a cold bottom :lol: ) crying as I was delaying him going for a walk to meet all his friends in the park - don't you just love'um! :wub: Honestly, I must sort my timing out! :lol: :lol:
