Hi,

Looking for toilet training advice...

We have a 3 month old Basset Hound and a 9 month old choc Labrador.

We have only had the Basset about 3 weeks and are trying to house train her and things seem to be going from bad to worse, both dogs have cages in the kitchen and up until now the Labrador was well behaved when it came to toilet time.

We have been using training pads in the cage with the Basset overnight and she has been messing/peeing on them and it's been ok(ish) but we read that we shouldn't be doing this so a few nights ago we left the training pad out and she messed all over the cage and the Labrador also messed in his cage which he never normally does.

Last night we tried leaving the Labrador out of his cage but still in the kitchen and yet again the Basset messed all over her cage and the Labrador messed on the kitchen floor.

We are now really concerned that the Labrador is going backwards and also not sure how to proceed with the Basset. Do we go back to putting training pads in the Bassets cage or try something else such as putting the Labrador in bedroom with us away from the Basset?

The dogs are never left alone for long periods apart from overnight, we take them into the garden at about 11pm and then get up about 6:30am and take them out again. It might be worth noting that a few times the Basset has done nothing in the garden then come into kitchen and messed but this has only been a few times.

Any advice much appreciated

Oh dear, sounds like you have gotten yourselves into a pickle!! ((hugs))

First of all - take a deep breath...

I wonder if to break the cycle if its worth setting the alarm for a few nights and take them out at 3/4am....

I think generally that dogs sleep and aren't disturbed until we wake up and start moving around, but these two maybe waking each other up and then need to toilet - your lab is still very young at 9 months and so doesn't still have perfect bladder/bowel control....

Is that workable?

I was told that pups are pushed away by there mothers to do there jobs outside the nest, so maybe have the pads by the back door when you get up at night so they can go away from the crate . I noticed with Meg though when she got upset in the cage at night she did pee. It will be a gradual thing so I'm with you on this topic all the way, oh I also bought some training spray to go on the pads so will let you know.
