This morning my whippet jumped over a ditch chasing a bird . He didnt make it he hit the bank and lay screaming . His joint on the front leg was swollen the size of a golf ball. Took him straight to the vets . He said hes badly torn his ligaments he gave him a metecam jab and five tablets and said dont walk him over the weekend . Any other advice on how to deal with this problem would be much appreciated . The dogs 14 months old.

Ohhh nasty, fullstop ruptured a Ligament on back hock at Scotland one year...i applied ice packs to reduce swelling which help as she refused to put the leg down before icing after a couple of hours she was walking on it again , we then had laser & ultra sound treatments, but she was off racing & training for months

Get rid of swelling first with ice packs then try doing what you would if it were a child--

Whitch Hazel is good along with arnica for bruising aloe vera gell very cooling

I have a young dog thats recently had a similar experience and i believe that only time will heal this sort of injury ultra sound mangnetic field therapy all help but at the end of the day natures way is best i think --its very upsetting watching them limp around massage also stimulates blood flow to affected area warm oil -------or what you would do for yourself i believe nearly always helps--

I personally believe in ice on any injury to start with the first 24 hours is important ..it stops swelling and bruising also stops bleeding in muscles

As Steve says time is the best healer

no advise im afraid but good :luck: :luck: :luck: hope he makes a speedy recovery

Just wanted to mention I've got tons of them ice packs in my van,(and other first aid stuff) if anyone needs any trackside just ask me.

I know Tommy Carr said his vet recons they saved Ballyreigns life when she tore both her muscles as she was bleeding out in to them heavily and we packed her with ice packs.

You can pick then up at Home & Bargain, Wilkinsons, chemists etc for about £1.50 for 2 ice packs, you can also get the heat packs for the same price which may be useful if your dog ever goes into shock.

I too have both heat and cold packs and ice spray in the car with me when racing. Along with about a ton of other stuff which comes in handy for both dogs and people  .

Thats awful news Pam :( so sorry, good :luck: with his recovery Karen

Plenty of swiming ,if you have access to a river or lake.Or even a smell pond will do if you can find one.I always swim an injured dog for a few weeks, after ligament damage, but in this weather get them dried as quikly as possible and into the heat. ...Billy...
