Josie was lure coursing yesterday and managed to tear her nail off one of her toes. She is just left with what looks like the quick exposed to the air. It looks so vulnerable, I was wondering if anyone knows how I can protect it? I am currently just keeping clean and disinfected, but I was wondering if there is anything I can do to protect it so she can continue going for walks?

We have had this happen a few times and the best thing is to buy some Hibiscrub lotion from the vet and bathe the foot several times a day (especially on return from walks) with the diluted solution to keep it as clean as possible. If it does get sore and infected, she will need antibiotics from the vet. Keeping it covered doesn't seem to help, regular bathing does.

Good luck :luck: :luck: :luck:

(w00t) Ouch! I can't imagine how painful that must have been for poor Josie (it's bad enough when I nick a nail during clipping :b ). Mind you, I bet her adrenaline was pumping during a lure chase, so maybe she didn't notice

I haven't got any advice, but I remembered that someone else had a similar injury recently. I'm sure you've already read the thread, but in case you didn't see it, here's the link. It might have some info which is helpful/reassuring  torn nail

My Mouse managed to take the sides off one of his nail leaving the quick exposed last week.

We bathed it (slooshed it around in a bowl) in salt water a couple of times a day to keep it clean.

Personally I'd leave Josie at home for a couple of days to let it settle down and harden.

Ouch, that sounds nasty >_<

I'm sure that's what Mr B would recommend too, he's a great fan of saline bathing for most wounds, and we've always found it helped
