Hi I have a whippet who has ripped his stopper pad chasing a ball.I have cleaned it up with saline solution and bandaged and have put a buster collar on to stop him removing it. It looks horrible and will take him to the vet first thing tomorrow. Just not sure if they will be able to stitch ,will they remove the pad? as he has torn it close to his leg.Does anyone have any experience of this injury and it's chance of healing. Think it is a common injury in racing hounds Thanks

Sorry just saw your post, probs a bit late and you will have been to vets already, my beagle did that and the vets sliced the pad off, no stitches it just healed up and grew back over time. Hope your boy is doing well :thumbsup:

Hi , it turned out that it was actually the skin under the pad that he had ripped so sedated, stitched and bandaged, antibiotics painkillers £200 . Very expensive trip to the park thanks to some irresponsible person.

Same as Murphy he sliced his on a lager can in the park in Bonnyrigg that the tractor lawnmower had ran over and sliced up!! Total d**kheads should put their rubbish in the bins!!

Thanks he is doing fine, bandage was off after 3 days and he is on strict lead walk which for a whippet who likes to charge after his ball is torture. He has been wearing his lampshade all the time apart from when we are watching him or on a walk as he won't leave his stitches alone! Back to the vet for the final check and then it's freedom! But no ball chasing or chasing after the lure for another couple of weeks sadly!

Really fed up, 5 days before he went back for his final check I had left him with his cone on while I went shopping returned to find his bed covered in blood. I can only assume he was mucking around and caught himself on the edge of the plastic dogs bed and opened the wound up again. I decided to let it heal itself so salt baths twice a day and manuka honey on a dressing at night, lead walks just short distance and after 3 weeks had healed nicely. He was allowed off lead for gentle run and all was going fine until yesterday when he chased a rabbit and braked . Result was he has opened the cut under his stopper pad again.

Question: Will it ever heal well enough for him to be able to chase after the lure, a ball etc I really don't want to get him sedated again and restitched as the first lot never worked.

Any advice anyone or previous experience

Re post this question in the racing section I bet lots of whippet people will have experience of this type of injury and be able to offer you advice, hope he is okay soon :thumbsup:

I know a lot of people use vet wrap over the stoppers, once it has healed you could try that when he is running. Without the extra protection their is a good chance it will happen again.
