Hallo to you all.I have a new puppy he is Max,12 week cross dachshund/JRT.

When you are giving a reward for trying to get your pup to do things, what are you using as a reward please??

Read so much info head gone into a spin,so perhaps some of you may share what you use and perhaps the make and where to get them please.

Enjoying reading some of the information being advised to us new owners ,that are trying to get it right.

Had dogs before, but things move on,plus you forget.

Thanks in advance.

I use normal food (Gentle) for some rewards, just taken from his daily allowance: but for something more challenging like a recall from a super interesting distraction I give liver cake - cut up 500g liver and blitz with an egg using a hand blender, stir in 250g flour (I use gluten free) and a slosh of olive oil if you like. Bake for 15 mins in a parchment lined 6 x 9 tray until a knife comes out clean. When cold cut into pieces and freeze (it freezes in separate pieces) so you can take out a piece at a time. It lasts us a couple of months. Some people use chicken and some use squeezy tubes of cheese to keep a dog's attention if necessary.

This is great never heard this before so will give it a go for sure.

Thanks so much.

It's good because there is no salt, sugar or rubbish in it.

If your dog is greedy then the normal food will be fine.

As JoanneF says, you sometimes need a special reward for recall or heel work. I use left overs from the fridge. Bits of fat from the chops, bacon rind, chicken, cheese etc. We get through loads of treats at Agility Training so then I buy cheap sausages, cook them, and cut them up very small. Treats need to be no bigger than your thumbnail.

If I was going to buy treats I would probably buy the Nature's Menu ones. For a small dog, dried cat food is often much appreciated :)

I cut puppy treats into really tiny pieces. You could use bits of real meat but we're vegan so buying meat pet food is about as far as we can go!
