hi all,

I was talking to 1 of my dog trainers today about zeb and the fact that its getting colder. :- "

I dont know if anyone else has this problem but when its wet, cold or windy Zeb will not sit for anything unlease its on a blanket in the house. :(

I was telling the trainer about this (as we are outside for training) Both her and a fellow trainer said that "hes a dog he will sit, you tell him to sit and he will even if you have to make him." they even said the same about laying down in the cold and wet, is this right,? she is used to training collies and he is used to huskes both of which of a lot of hair. :(

MEO has seen what hes like in the winter, and everyone (i thought) know what he is like.

 well if somone told me to sit on sumit wet and muddy or wet concrete id tell em were to go and wouldnt do it ...so i wouldnt make my dogs do anything i wasnt prepared to do myself .but thats just me

Dolly doesn't like sitting on wet ground either. When I used to take her to dog training she refused to lie down on the wooden floor, so I used to take a piece of vet bed for her and that worked very well. :)

I definately think it is a Whippet thing.

Mmmm, well i wouldn't ask,or expect any of mine to sit or lay down in the cold/wet/mud/wind....they're whippets, not bloody collies

Sit outside in the wet (w00t)

My lot stick their noses out of the door and if its wet will refuse to go outside William the greyhound goes out in the garden in the rain then goes out of the front door for his walk and looks up as if to say

 it raining out here too

the only one of mine that will willingly go out if its wet is the irish setter pup but she's puddled anyway (w00t)

If I want sit in the wet and mud I don't expect my dogs to do it

Our dog traners very much like mic of dog borstal very tuff and strict but even he said with a bony bum like a whippets you carnt expect them to sit outside in the cold so Indy did stay or sit with a mat in the winter. if they will; stand and stay there no problem i know mine will stand for hours before they sit on cold wet ground. If hes addement that Zeb should sit I would look for another class.

I totally agree with Wendy (and everyone else!) -the trainer we went to told me to always bring something soft for Polly and Twiggy to use for 'sit' and 'down', on our first lesson. We had no problems and both girls got their silver awards using the fleece.

Find another class if your present one is unhelpful, as Wendy suggests - shows your trainer doesn't understand whippets. Another thing our trainer said was that there was no point trying to make them keep repeating an action - if they've done it properly once, they often won't keep repeating it (especailly if it is boring! :( ). Pollly would do one good recall in class then wander off if asked to do it again, with an 'I've done that, so you've had your lot' expression - little b****r (w00t)

Daisy wont sit if the ground is not just right, she keeps backing up but cant quite bring herself to sit :D

Luckily our classes are indoors, although the test for some things is taken outside

If we are in the kitchen and someone offers Sparky a treat and you tell him to sit he goes and sits in the dining room on the carpet, no way will he set on a stone tiled floor. (w00t)

Jenny

Yep arnt they funny. lol. Nelly wont sit on the wooden floor in the dining room even if the house is really toasty. Has to be on a blanket or a knee. Dont think she'd ever speak to me again if i tried to make her sit on the floor ourside (w00t) . Heaven forbid :D

Me thinks your trainer needs a few lessons on whippet behaviour.

If YOU feel it's important for your dog to learn to sit or lie no matter if it's cold or wet, then I'd keep at it. But if not, go seek out another trainer.

If there is no reason for you to need your dog to carry out sitting or lying on cold or wet ground, then there is no point in making the poor thing do it for the sake of "training". Yo can just teach these things in more comfortable condidtions or as others have suggested, use something for your dog to sit/lie on.

Don't feel pressured into forcing your dog to do something neither of you are happy with. That's not the sign of a good trainer imho.

i take a waterproof dog quilt...i got it from pets at home ...mine wouldnt sit on wet cold grass even if their life depended on it...lol  o:)

Our Bandit only went to outdoor training in winter if it was sunny and the ground was dry....if it was raining then after 15 mins he had had enough....no way would he sit on wet grass...he would just give you a pitiful look or do a half sit.....

Well i think by all the replies ,you will have gathered by now that it's definitely a ........................................

Whippet thing!!!

Another idea why not hire a local village hall in winter for an hour ..up our way the cost is £10...and hire the trainer to do an indoor class....I am sure there could be other owners who could join in to help you with the costs...you would probably only need about seven of you...and all the dogs would be happier......
