Has anyone found recipes for any home made treats that our beloved whippies really love. As they used to sell Liver Cake at Harleys puppy class but have since stopped making it and he used to do anything for it...... :p

So if anyone has a recipe for this and the instructions of how to make it could you please tell me........ any other recipes that are easy  also would be good!!!!! :D

Liver cake.

All ingredients are approx.

1 ib liver

4-5 cloves garlic

1 egg

1 ib - 1 1/2 ib wholemeal flour (or any will do)

put liver, crushed garlic and egg into food processor and whizz till disgusting!!!

I then put into a glass dish and stir in flour until it is scone like.

place onto a greased baking tray, flatten out and bake for 15 -20 mins at gas no.5.

Garlic sausage.

Split sausage in half lenghways. Sprinkle with garlic powder and place on a grid over a roasting tin (or similar to catch the fat)

Place in fairly hot oven and bake until sausage is quite well done.

Cheese biscuits.

1 cup of wholemeal flour

1 cup of grated cheese

1 tsp veg. oil

1 tsp garlic powder

1/2 cup of milk (I use goats milk)

Mix cheese, flour and garlic, stir in veg. oil and milk.

Mixture should be firm enough to turn onto a floured board. Knead until smooth.

Roll onto baking sheet (no need to grease) cut into biscuit sized bites and bake for approx 15 mins at gas 5.

(Keep an eye on them or the cheese soon burns.)

I use these biscuits sparingly or they can get a bit "loose" - if you know what I mean.

The bisuits keep well in an airtight container and the other 2 freeze really well.

Have fun!!

That really sums it up,it's the only thing that really turns my stomach, :x

Brilliant thread! Thanks for that cheese biscuit recipe - I've been meaning to have a go at baking some for a while now. And I'd much rather do those than the liver cake, I don't think I could do that again :x it really was the most revolting thing that has ever happened in my food processor :x

easiest and cheapest dog treats - ever!

cut up liver into treat sized strips

spread them out on a baking tray and put in the oven on its lowest setting for ages! you need them to totally and completely dry out, then they'll keep for a long time in your pocket and won't make a mess, promise!

it can take 2-3 hours, and will make your kitchen smell - but dogs love them! :x

Liver dries out really well in the microwave. All you need is a rack suitable for the microwave.

slice up liver, put on rack and set on full power. I set it for 5 minutes then turn the liver. The time varies as to how thick the liver is, but it is much, much quicker than the oven. (Being a veggie, I rarely have my oven on for long periods, so it is much easier for me.)

Thanks everyone some really handy tips here, I am the same as everyone else about the liver thing, so much so I just had to buy a new food processor as couldn't bring myself to use the old one i had used for liver!! :x

I bought my processor just for the liver cake - I couldn't use it for anything else either!! It is easier if you pour the gunge into a bowl and then add the flour. It's much easier to wash the processor then!

This is not a topic for bedtime - I'm going to watch TV to try and take my mind off it!!

  And I thought I was the only one who had to do that!!!! :x Last time I made liver cake, I told myself it would be the very last time ever, as I was very nearly sick all over the kitchen floor!! :x

I will definitely do the baked liver thing next time. The other things that are great for easy treats are sliced frankfurters or cocktail sausages - you get loads of titbits from each one and they are not messy!

Just bumping up this brilliant thread.

Thanks for the recipes. I've been baking these! They're really good - a really nice firm bite of yumminess

Last time I baked them, added a squirt of tomato puree and some chopped ham to the mix, and also a beaten egg and a little bit more garlic. They smell heavenly when you take the lid off the airtight container and the dogs go wild. The children and OH stole a few off the cooling rack too

And just to make them perfect for whippies - I used a rabbit-shaped biscuit cutter :- "
