As some of you know from personal experience, my dog has been behaving slightly oddly recently especially in the peeing department. He had a wet dream a couple of nights ago, the result of which was decidedly pink which rang alarm bells, so it was straight off to the vet this morning.

Well, the verdict is that he has an enlarged prostate, and will need a course of testosterone-suppressing drugs as an initial treatment. The change in behaviour is probably related to this too, they seemed quite confident that this should go away with treatment. He's on antibiotics as well, just in case the swelling is due to infection.

If the course of injections/ABs doesn't make it go down, then they'll have to castrate. He was so good during the examination, which was quite, erhem, intimate. :b

Hope all goes well. :luck: :luck:

Awwww poor lad :( Hope the ABs/injections sort it out :luck:

It took me until half way through this post to work out 'down under' was nothing to do with Australia!   Obviously a blonde day

Hmmn, it's difficult to think of nice euphemisms, 'my dog has pink ejaculate' seemed a bit brutal this early in the day :b

He's fine in himself, no signs of illness or discomfort whatsoever. It was the odd behaviour I was worried about, I'm glad the cause has been explained esp. with a potential new addition.

Poor boy. When Bean was bunged up they tried to insert a tube along his penis. Bean clearly thought that they were very rude judging by his eyes. Oh that was after the rectal exam. He just stood on the table and thought that this particular judge was being very personal I think.

I hope that the hormones and AB's work. :luck:

Yes, I spent all yesterday following him round trying to get pee samples, he kept on stopping in mid flow, just as the cup appeared, then nip off to another bush giving me a very strange look :b I dont think they like unusual behaviour in their owners either

When I did catch it, it splashed all over my face too :x I hope it's good for the complexion.

   (w00t) Yes I think the 'down under' is very suitable! :b

I'd be quite interested to know how common this is in whippets, I did a search on K9 and only found one suspected case which turned out to be a urinary infection.

Good luck with the treatment :luck: sorry to hear all isn't well, but at least you now have an explanation for the change in behaviour

Good Luck Gelert! Hope the treatment and examinations are not all too rude :- "

LOL! Poor lad will get a complex. Uric acid is in most of the very expensive skin creams. Ammonia used to be used to condition/soften wool after it had gone through the severe dying process in the mills.

So yes stale urine is good for the skin. :D

I think an enlarged prostate is pretty common in older dogs Elizabeth. Our old dog Duster had one and I think Bandit did too.

Poor Gelert - how embarrassing for him. :- " :- " :( :( Hope he gets well soon. :luck: :luck:

Sorry to hear Gelert has this problem, hopefully he will be back to his old self after treatment.

:b And he'll get his dignity back poor boy
