This weekend I saw the following ad for a Race meeting and thought you might be interested

SKELTON

RUNNING GROUND

CLEVELAND

On SATURDAY, Dec 9, 1876

JOHN ELLIOTT will give

TWO PIGS

TO BE RUN FOR

By 28 Dogs at 200 yards straight out

Entries 3s each

First Prize – The Best Pig

Second “ – The other Pig

Third “ – 10s.

All Dogs to be measure on their sides, from the shoulder blade to the first

Black. The least dog to receive 8 yards to the inch. All dogs to start by the

Report of powder. Anyone slipping or tailing his dog over the mark to lose the

Course. Anyone entering two dogs to be guarded through.

I missed the entry so couldn't enter.

What I found most interesting was the the race meeting was limited to 28 dogs - how was this arranged? if running in pairs it should have been 32 dogs - any body got any ideas?

Also the 200 yards handicap was 1yd per 1/8 inch - interesting or what?

The first black is the pad on the paw - so the measure was from the pad to the shoulder blade.

;)

The Report of Powder is a Gun firing - so no lure - Rag Racing

over the mark - was a too early slip

guarded entry - is where your two dogs are in different halves of the draw. - so would only meet in the final - which, I would seem to think was an arrangement of pairs of dogs running in knockout format like Coursing.

Any help with the interpretation of the rules - gratefully recieved. (w00t)

Very interesting advert :)

I'm pretty sure that 6 7 & 8 dog races were common back in those days, so 4 x 7 dog heats with the first 2 going through would result in either 2 x 4 dog semis and a 4 dog final ... or a straight 8 dog final, which I think more likely.

I heard that the consolation winners got bags of pork scratchings :teehee:

Yes 8 dog races are still run in Oz.

These dogs would have run in coloured collars - it would be interesting to find out the colours used.

If they were happy with 7 and 8 dog racing, I still do not understand why the heats were not 8 dog heats which would mean that the event was open to 32 dogs not only 28 dogs. This would be 4 eight dog heats, with two going through in each heat to a 8 dog final. ;)
