Hi there

My vet has recommended that we bring our 10 week old puppy back to them to get a flea/worm treatment from them in a few weeks after getting his vaccinations. However, I'd rather choose a flea/worm tablet/spot on lotion that I could use by myself at home instead (if it can do the same job!). It should be cheaper and it means I don't have to book appointments to go see the vet/nurse.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a decent flea/worm lotion or tablet that I can buy in a normal store/pet store? My vet said that Bob Martin can cause reactions in puppies. I'm not sure if this is true!

Any help is welcome!

Thanks

Your vet has possibly asked you to go in to weigh your puppy so he can get the right dose. Once he is grown you can buy over the counter flea and tick spot on treatments but I think worming tablets still have to be by veterinary prescription (although you can buy the prescription from the vet then buy the tablets online - that of course runs the risk of counterfeit tablets if you are not careful). I tried Bob Martin once and my dog picked up a tick the next week so I don't rate it. With a puppy I wouldn't take chances of a reaction because their little systems aren't developed.

None of the pet shop type wormers and flea treatments work I am afraid. Yes, the vet ones are more expensive but they are effective so you are not wasting your money. you can, if you wish, get a prescription from your vet to buy the effective ones on line.

It is also very good for your puppy to socialise with your vet. It will make life much easier if he likes going to the vet. This is the age that puppies learn what is good about the world. Just popping in for a weigh in is a good idea every so often.

Hello. I would only treat my dogs for fleas if the actually had them or were at risk of getting them. I would not routinely treat with spot ons as I think it means a lot of unnecessary chemicals on your dog.

Your pup should be wormed at 12 weeks and I would also recommend getting them weighed at the vets. You do not however need a prescription for wormers and they are readily available online from veterinary suppliers such as hyperdrug.com .You do need to know what your dog actually weighs in order to dose correctly.

I totally agree with the above post by "dogmatise". The above post has saved me writing the same all over again.

I admit I hate paying vets over inflated prices. I go on Amazon now for decent pet stuff. Panacur is a good worming paste- I use it for my cats and puppy and I have no problems with it.
