According to Our Dogs online, whippet registrations were up 58 % the first half of 2005. I was just wondering how UK breed enthusiasts feel about it - is this worrying? I know if numbers were up as much in my country, I would be worried (not as worried as if my breed were Welsh Corgi Cardigans, though, whose registration numbers were up by 600 % - can anyone explain such an enormous rise in popularity to us foreigners?)

Maybe the lovely Dee Dee winning Best in show at Crufts has some thing to do with it .

Ive just put on another thread about a `lady` in the Matlock area who has registered 35 pups already this year . (w00t) I havent heard of her :- " , so dont think she shows , but she not giving some people KC papers with their pups and then being abusive when thay ask for them !

as regards Welsh cardigans , I think they are on the `danger` list , so 600% might not be THAT many

Of course it is good that people want whippets. Whippets generally make wonderful companions, and I am sure a lot of heartache could be avoided if more people chose a whippet rather than more demanding breeds.

However, sudden surges of popularity seem to have caused problems in other breeds in the past. Popularity makes it easier to sell pups, even from second rate stock, which means the breed might end up attracting both the wrong sort of breeder and the wrong sort of owners, who are basically looking for the "flavour of the month." When the novelty has worn off, you end up with huge numbers of ill-bred, maladjusted dogs of last year's breed in rescue situations. It seems to be happening with Chihuahuas in Scandinavia (and elsewhere?) at the moment, and it certainly has affected other breeds in the past (Dalmatians and Collies spring to mind).

I am not saying this is going to happen with whippets, only wondering if UK residents see any other signs that there may be reason for concern.

i am not qualified to judge the breed standards of whippets so dont feel able to pass comment on if the breed is suffering ,, with such a rise it may not be untill next year we see the pups in the ring so im sure the more experienced on here can keep us informed.

i had made a couple of mistakes , being " persuaded " by so called "good breeders " (ps i add its no one on k9 so please dont be offended  )

regarding puppies ,, and people keep telling me to breed my own , to be honest im not intrested in breeding :b and i love to show my dogs and i do think they change when they have had a litter ( or is this just my opinion ???)

but i have had the breed supplement and there are an awful lot of litters around.

Conformation is one thing, much more serious in the breeds mentioned are/have been health problems, lack of socialization because breeders breed too many pups to be able to give them individual attention, breeding from dogs with poor temperaments and so on, simply because the demand for puppies becomes so great. I certainly hope this will not be the case with whippets.
