Do you remember the United Kingdom Pedigree Whippet Racing Federation?

I’m doing a bit of research into the history of pedigree racing and I know the following facts:

1. Their first Championships meeting was over 300 yards bends, at Hinckley Greyhound Stadium on Sunday, 9th December 1979.

2. The Racing Manager was Mr D Lytham

3. They ran to a Supreme Final, 1st through only (with all group winners being reweighed).

4. I was at this first meeting and I remember Steve Berg was there also (from the south) but can’t remember anyone else who may be still racing

5. They had a least one more meeting when Dave Morris (from Newmarket) won a weight group with his dog Major Morris (30), but I don’t know when this was.

I know Gumpy(26) and Sin-y-sin(18) from Tamworth WRC, and Hot Gossip(20) from Dosthill WRC (I think) all ran

Does anyone remember any other facts?

We remember it well Rob we raced at Hinkley Stadium over 300 yard bends with Backchat (Brown Jack x Twinkle) and won the 24lb group beating Besaps Snowman loosing out to Cockeymore Flyer in the Supreme we also ran Pity Me (daughter of Cockeymore Flyer) at Stoke on Trent amoungst others racing was Tony Harry from Cornwall who won the 20lb group with Kernow who was Pity Me sister. We must be about the only ones left racing who have won the 4 different Championships mind that only because we have beenracing for such a long time.

June and Len McD

Am looking at a write up in the WN Rob. Written by Robbie - was that you?

Ron Pickup's Besaps Ajax won the first race which was the 31lb final and was the Federations first champion.

The Shuttleworth's Butty won the 18lb group (I think the name is a misprint and this dog's name was really Butterfly)

Cliif Sadler's Danaway Dormouse won the 16lb group

Snowman won the 28lb group (It doesn't say so but I think it belonged to a Mr Coley?)

Hot Gossip won the 20lb group

Besap's Rocket won the 22lb group.

Backchat won the 24lb group. Again no owners name but I think this one belonged to June & Len so they could probably help you.

Cockeymoor Flyer had the fastest time of the day and won the supreme

And keep it on I should think - not really what this topic is about though Hannah.

No I know .....Just couldn't resist, but for the record I personally don't think we have non ped blood in our peddie racing lines

You could always try Tony Lewis Rob ...... Hes on this site as tlewis .....He might be able to help you :D

one fact that I can remember about the Hinkley Race Meeting Rob was that it had poured with rain and they were up to their hocks in mud, our dog had never seen an electric hare but we were so new to the sport that we thought it wouldn't matter, mind she had run a lot of bends at Oxford and Wokingham. Their were a lot of fair minded people racing their who could not understand how so many litters had been banned at thetime and what a lot of people forget it was not just the Besapd WCRA Ch Tipper 10 winner also had his offspring b anned as did the rest of his litter, Don't know what you are bringing in the non-ped bit Hannah those of us who owned Besaps never thought of them as that and we won't have a word said against them just remember what it stood for Beauty Elegance Speed and Power. I took Pity Me in at 18 months old after the Besaps had been banned and her owner no longer wanted her I raced her all over the place Gloucester, Oxford and Dosthill and Wokingham she was my little treasure to the day she died, many a time she has saved the night for us at Wokingham just ask the Peppermint Crew and Ernie and Chris.

yes i must admit pity me was  a smashing little dog .always gave it her all little dog big heart. won on her a few times myself it must of been a great loss to you june when you lost her . if you get a little dog like that in your lifetime of raceing i think you can call yourself lucky

looking at some of the posts , I still find it nuts to think that the owners of Besaps realy thought they were pedigrees, Pepermint Lady, no one is saying they were not perfect pets, with a great nature, but pedigree's wake up. I raced at the time besaps arrived, and if you look at the stud registar in the none ped section you will see the owner of Ajax had the litter brother of Another Maid at stud. Most rumers were that it was Good as Gold as the sire of the first Beasps Litter, but who know's it just might have been this dog, it was so easy to do. But regardless of who the stud dog was it was 100% a non ped. Getting back to Tipper ten times WCRA championship winner, I was at tamworth the first time Tipper raced Ajax, tipper had two yards start and lost by 5 at least, and looking at ajax it was no surprise to me, as I do know what a Non ped looks like esspecialy then as they were much more bully looking then than they are now.

i didnt think this thread was about non peds . :( i was only replying to june on her dog pityme and she certainly didnt look bully  and yes their were certain dogs way back then whos pedigrees might of been shall we say dodgy . and yes they make lovely pets but like yourself i enjoyed raceing mine .and all were peds .its such a shame that this subject of non peds keeps rearing its head . neil and i enjoy ped raceing .as im sure do those with nonpeds .seems like after all these years somethings never change . well keep smiling :D and enjoy your raceing i know we will

Thanks for all your replies to this request.

Confused I am - I was Robbie (you have to remember Robert is a family name for the first born Rixon boy) hence the confussion. Robert W Rixon - was my father, called little Bob - when younger so not to be confused with his father, etc. I had uncle Bobs, great uncle Bobs and now Robert N Johnson (called Robbie) is my grandson. I was also call Bob for a long part of my life but when my father died in 1980 (most knew him then as Bob Rixon also) with the respect to my Mother most of the family started to call me Rob (or Joan's Rob). So if you are part of my family and a boy there is a good chance you will be called Robert, and some part of your mother's name would be included.

So Judy, the Robbie who wrote in WN all those years ago is me. And some racing (and coursing) people still call me Robbie, others still call me Bob (including my grand children) - thats why some would say I so confused - I blame my family!

Back to the request - I know all about the first UKpedWRFed's meeting, but only that Major Morris won a 'Championship' at another meeting! Does anyone have details of this second (or even third) meeting?

Thanks again for the comments so far.

You're confused

OK whatever your name is - I know I have seen other write up's for UKPWRF the in the WN so I'll have a look later

Going down to Cornwall tomorrow will be seeing Christine and Tony Harry will see what we can remember when we put our heads together, I'm certain that Christine keeps her old programmes etc. unlike me so info on the Stoke on Trent meeting should be their. I have put that meeting out of my head as Pity Me was in front I think in the semi when Len shouted her name and she ran off the track to him. It was a long journey home that day.
