warning i have just come of the phone to a freind that went for a walk up sherwood pines , both of his dogs took ill after the walk they are now both on drips and its touch and go, the vet seems to think its got something to do with fern and there spores, warnings at sherwood pines , center parcs and blidworth/rainworth .be carefull and pass it on atb lucan

Thanks for the warning, we regularly walk our dogs around Clumber Park, which is not far from Sherwood Pines.

Warnings after new spate of dogs falling ill in Notts

WARNINGS have been put up at a number of Notts beauty spots where at least six dogs fell ill after visiting them.

The Forestry Commission is advising owners to keep their pets on leads while walking them to reduce the risk.

The warning comes after four dogs died and 14 fell ill after walking in the Sherwood Forest area in late September last year.

Five new incidents have been reported in the last two weeks, involving six dogs, in areas including Papplewick Ponds, Sherwood Heath, and the Bilsthorpe to Southwell trail.

Stuart Burgess, of the Forestry Commission, said the incidents were not just in Forestry Commission land.

"It looks like whatever it was last year could be reoccurring this year because we have got similar reports in similar areas at the same time of year.

"We are putting notices up on our sites to say that there is something happening again and to put dogs on a lead and if their dogs fall ill to take them to the vet quickly."

A spokeswoman for Natural England said: "Natural England has been made aware of recent incidents of dogs being taken ill in woodlands in the Sherwood area.

"The symptoms and timing of these incidents are identical to an outbreak in the same area last year and as a result it is highly likely that they have the same cause.

"It was established that pesticides or other man-made chemicals were not involved in last year's outbreak and we believe that this latest outbreak is caused by naturally-occurring agents such as ticks or mites.

"Natural England's involvement in investigating wildlife poisoning relates to pesticide or chemical poisoning only and in the absence of evidence for either we will not be conducting a separate investigation into the incidents that have been recently reported.

"We would advise people to keep their dogs under close control or on a lead if they do walk in woodlands in the Sherwood area and to follow any on-site information provided by the Forestry Commission."

I don't know if this is related to the problem your having up your way, but Idless woods in Truro (owned by the forestry commission), that i walk in have got a notice up asking you to scrub your shoes in the bucket and brush provided, because they've got some kind of fungi spores found around the pines and it's being carried from the woods on your shoes. :b (haven't heard of any dogs becoming ill thou) :- :thumbsup: di

we had our jack russell in clumber park on sunday 12th sept and he loved it,by tuesday afternoon he was very ill and making noises like he was in a lot of pain.the vet gave him injections and said the next 24 hours were critical.he was worse then and could hardly stand.he was getting on a bit and we took the decision to have him put to sleep to stop his suffering.it seems too much of a coincidence given recent press reports about dogs ill after being in clumber park,does anyone know owt else about this? rip my old friend
