Is that a trick question ? The Waterloo cup is for coursing greyhounds.

So the answer is NO.

The Waterloo Cup is a greyhound event. The greyhounds running in the cup years ago were much smaller than they are now. For example Master McGrath weighed around 54lbs (1862 ish) and the finalists in this year's cup were more like 90lbs.

How heavy are coursing whippets these days?

I know that people have attempted to get Whippets in the Waterloo Cup meet as a "side show" without much sucess.

Coursing whippets can be as heavy as you like as long as they are under 20 inches in height. (as somebody once told me :p ). Mine are 23lb and 28lb.

Personally I'd like to see an 8/16 dog whippet stake but I don't think it'll ever happen! :b Then you'll get the Salukis wanting a stake, etc....

Regards,

Scott.

I tried several years ago to get an 8 dog stake for whippets on the final day of the Waterloo Cup, I contacted Ronnie Mills who was Secretary at the time and after several letters/calls the request was turned down by the Waterloo Cup committee.

I'm sure there has been at least one stake for whippets run over Altcar on the Friday after the Waterloo. I seem to remember it being announced over the "blower" on the last day. I was about 11 or 12 then so we are talking well over 40 years ago so maybe my memory is playing tricks on me. I've asked other people if they remember this but nobody seems to except Ray Taylor & he didn't have all the details. It wasn't an official part of the actual Waterloo just making use of what hares were still on the ground.
