From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.....

The lurcher is a type of dog. Not a pure breed, it is a hardy, crossbred sighthound, generally a

cross between a sighthound and any other breed, usually a pastoral dog or terrier. Collie crosses

have always been very popular given the working instinct of the sheepdog when mated with a

sighthound gives a dog of great intelligence plus speed - prerequisites in this type of canine.

So is a Whippet x Italian Greyhound a Lurcher ?

It does say a sighthound and any other breed. But it does also say usrally pastoral or terrier.

Can it not be classed as a lurcher if its a cross from the toy group?

I would have said that a whippet x greyhound is probably one of the commonest lurcher crosses...and that is two sighthounds. (The wikipedia entry implies it has to be a sighthound crossed with something other than a sighthound which I disagree with.)

I would have classed a whippet x italian greyhound as a lurcher myself! (but what do I know  )

No i wouldn't have thought the Whippet x Iggy was a lurcher but as you

say what it it then......just a x ?

Like you again i would call Whippet X Greyhound a lurcher but it you look

it up it says

A Longdog is a type; it is a crossbreed between two sighthounds . They are

distinct from the Lurcher which is a cross between a sighthound breed and

a non-sighthound breed (usually a herding breed or a terrier)

oh so that is what a long dog is!!

(and here was me thinking it was a dachshund! - only joking!)

There are books written about these things but it is a long time since I looked at them so I have forgotten it all!

Technically a lurcher is a cross between a sighthound and a non-sighthound working breed. A cross between two different sighthound breeds is a longdog.

In practice, 'lurcher' tends to be used for any sighthound crosses.

a lurcher is a poacher mans dog for the poor people.
