What Is An 'accredited Breeder'?

Hi all,

I've just been making myself broody looking thru the whippets for sale ads, and keep coming across some litters that boast being from 'accredited breeders'. I just wondered what this meant? how you become accredited and by whom, and what it implies re. the puppies.

How soul destroying some of these adverts are! The worst to date was a photo (3 diff. versions) of a dog and bitch tied in mating! The ad was along the lines of - don't want the bitch anymore as she is not house trained, and she is now most probably in pup, the worst part was that they wanted £200 for her AND wanted a pup from the litter to give to a relative. Gobsmacked!!

A current one advertises that his bitch is now in season as a bit of an inducement to buying her. Very sad.

I digress! - accredited breeders, who are you! lol

I don't know what it means but the breeder I got my beagle boy James from,was very outspoken about the fact she was an accredited breeder...this didn't stop her selling me a dog with entropion though so I don't think it means much to be accredited if an idiot like her can be accredited.

your best bet is to go to the kennel club and reseach what an accredited breeder is and should be. New guildlines comming out will make it alot harder for people to join too.

Unless its been changed recently its a load of crap,

anyone can become Accredited with no home checks

done on them or anything.

hi, i am an accredited breeder and yes, you are right, it is (or was) very easy for me to

become registered as one. unfortunately, when it comes to whippets, as they are a healthy breed

and dont require any health tests being accredited means very little.

However as i also breed cocker spaniels, who do require numerous tests, ifeel that it shows that i have taken the time to

test my dog and believe in breeding for health. this year i did have a visit from a KC Official

and had to produce all certificates and test results for my cocker and chat about my breeding practices.

the system isnt by any means perfect but at least its a start towards more responsible breeding.

Its another one of the Kennel clubs wonderful ideas . When it first came out anyonecould appply , even my M I L who dosnt have a dog at all , Now there are more checks being made I suppose its going in the right direction ,but it is still sadly lacking in control , and unforunatley ordinary folk see `Accredited Breeder ` and presume they are the best , WRONG .

Out of 60.000 breeders in the uk ony 5,000.have so far joined , says it all dosnt it

At last the KC are inspecting breeders and I know of at least 1 former AB who has been demoted .

Whippetsrule did you inform the KC about your dog ? they have a special part for AB returns , if not do so straight away

Some big names etc have joined, but they are under pressure to join I think , as they dont want to `rock the boat`

me join ? not unless there is no other option or I see it improve and work to the good of all pedigree dogs

no Worries AnnSa, i agree with you to an extent, a lot more needs to be done.

i just wanted to explain why i do it, and yes, it certainly does attract people, and

not all of them good. many people seem to think that they are entitled to one of

your pups as long as they have the money. i have a litter due on sunday and have so far

discounted 4 people that have called. accredited or not i am still picky about where

my babies go. :thumbsup:

deserves to be awarded with with AC, i wish you well

i am a member of the AB scheme , the reason i joined is that i wanted to see breeders having to raise the standards for the benefit of dogs ,and be a step above in welfare and health etc etc , i must admit im unhappy at the lack of policing the scheme , i want high levels to adhere to !!! not just for AB but for all dogs and puppies !!! life and experience has taught me what i feel is high standards

i feel on paper the scheme is GOOD , however with the lack of policing and no checks , it is simply a paper exercise :angry:

Thank you for this reply Bertha! was it the same bitch in both ads? and if not, which one is rescued. I found the two mating dogs ad more upsetting, just in its blatancy, but in theory, both bitches were going to end up in similar circumstances so are both equally deserving. Great news anyhow!

Just in case anyone is reading this who is looking for a puppy, please, please start with the breed clubs, ask if they have information about puppies and go from there. There are so many people breeding whippet puppies at the moment, it's a minefield for those not in the know.

Great advice Jenny, I am just window shopping with the benefit of experience and find it bleak but fascinating how the various pups are being marketed, and there are MASSES! is there a sudden trend in breeding dogs generally? perhaps related to the credit crunch.

The vast majority are 'working' strain dogs, but there are some show quality ones too amongst them, but tricky to sort out the goats from the sheeps!

My very first (now 14yr old) whippet came from one such advert and was comparatively cheap. She did turn out to be well bred, having the Chyton line on one side, but was appallingly raised! and gave us some hefty vets bills when she was a pup due to malnutrition. She is still a very poor doer. I also had to fight to have her KC registered - yes, minefield is the word!

My second whippet, thru whippet rescue was/is a Baldrey, and it was a hugely different ballgame. His breeder was a total education in whippets, and a friend and adviser at any time needed! An all round lovely experience.

I wholeheartedly agree with your advice Jenny and add that if you are considering an older whippet (Foggy was 7mths) whippet rescue is a good way to go too! with the benefit of the extra feel good factor for having done your bit! lol

i saw this farm/smallhloding for sale recently.ive seen a post that says this guy is KC approved(accredited breeder scheme)and tbh im disgusted.ive a good mind to send these pics to the KC and ask them if this is considered good enough?i wouldnt keep pigs in there :angry: click on the link 7th post down

they are of course in the notorious carmarthenshire puppy farming community,where the local council who licenses these establishments turns a blind eye to animal suffering :rant:
