I have lurchers but I watch this forum closely as I am thinking of taking the plunge into the show ring with a whippet (I think) at some time in the near future.

As a complete not knower I am very confused with the difference in outline of the various cc winners. Is it just what the judges fancy at the time or should there be more consistency and if so what is correct?

Sorry to be such an idiot.

Rosie

PS I live in Suffolk out in the wilds so lots of room for running dogs.

Is this a loaded question or just a very silly one?

I do have books and I have read the standard. It's just that there seems to be such a very big difference in the shapes of the cc winners that i really am confused.

Should dogs and bitches have different outlines?

Interesting question :))

I suppose we all interprete the breed standard differently, like we all read a book, and have different views :- "

The way we interprete it, comes to how we judge.

The shape is only one part of the overall dog - important but not the be-all-and-end-all

It is akin to saying the dogs are different sizes or colours or move differently etc.

I can see that differences may stand out more than the similarities do to an non exhibitor.

HI Rosie

I think you should be able to tell the difference in a dog and a bitch. Obviously the dog should me more masculine and the bitch more refined. Shape as the others have said is not the only thing you need to take into consideration, that said it is an important element to our lovely breed.

At most shows Whippets have such a large entry there are different judges for dogs and bitches, maybe that is why you see a diffence in the dog & Bitch winners :- " HTH

i have never shown dogs, but have been involved with poultry and rabbits etc and i think the key word is "type" any judge will judge to breed standards etc but certain judges favour certain "types" hence why members will post asking who is judging at such an such show

Good point. But you also may of noticed the diference of that said out line in the way it can be of different heights from the ground.

I think its right what Cartman says in a way the shape can be influenced by the length of the leg sometimes.

If you read the breed standard it is only really clear AFTER you know the breed quite well. A really good exercise (for anyone) is to get someone to read a totally unknown breed standard to you then you can roughly DRAW that dog as you think it should look. Its quite an eye opener and great party game for dog people  :p

So judges have there own ideas what a Whippet should look like plus when placing their winners they may be working with dogs that are the best on that day.

If you decide to have a go at showing just get something you like the look of, I wouldnt try too hard to get a type thats winning at one or two shows you go to.
