Hiya everyone. My name is Kara and im new here!

I am owned by 2 gorgeous siberian huskies who i love with all my heart.

I need some advice please!

We had an accidental mating, which i am so scared about! We are normally so carefull, but it was our own fault. We are having the pups, but im really scared about Tyra being harmed? :(

Anyway im making up a whelping kit. I want to make sure i am as prepared as i can be. So what do you think is essential?

so far ive got written down

Whelping box

detol

kitchen towel

thermometer

pen and paper, alcohol gel and wipes

heat pad

Any thing else??

thanks kara xx

hio kara and welcome to k9!

there are some fab books with lots of advice on amazon.com, or have you gone back to your breeder and asked their advice?

also try the FAQ sect on here you will find lots of help on there

There's a good book I borrowed from my local library called the 'Book of the Bitch' I think. Loads of info.

Is your whelping box heated? If not then maybe a hot water bottle or heat pad.

Another warm dry area that you might need to pop the pups in as she is delivering the next one. then you put them all back with her.

You'll also need a clock or watch

phone number of vet you can get to at short notice ANYTIME.

Deep breaths, stay calm, says me, the biggest panic merchant around

When our bitch was having pups my vet recommended getting 'The book of the Bitch' .We got it from Pets at Home and it was about £10 it was really helpfull and ful of good advise about what to get and what signs to look out for

u will need to make a frame around the inside of the welping box ( broom handles are great for this) so that ur bitch can lean against it without the chance of crushing the pups against the side wall, vet bed is the best sort of bedding to have in the welping box cos its easy to clean and machine washable, i would get 3 sheets of it (cut to the size of ur welping box) one for the box, one in the wash and one drying. there is also a supplement u can give ur bitch every day while she is pregnant called raspberry leaf. my aunt breeds labs and she swears by it, it helps to get a smooth birth.

arrange with a friend or relative to be an emergancy taxi ( just incase ) cos u will need to be in the back of the car with ur bitch too keep her calm.

good luck hunny and remember above all else if u stress so will ur bitch so keep calm!

keep us informed and lots of pics when the happy day come please :huggles:

Aww thanks you lot! :D

Ive got the book of the bitch. I am going to get my other half to make a whelping box, with pig rails? i think thats what their called?? ive bought lots of vet bedding, im goin to get a heat pad.

I'm going to be a nervous wreck, Im worried about Ty being hurt :(

I'm such a worrier anyway!! I just thought that you lot may know more things i need, but sounds like everyone suggests the same things. I'll try the raspberry leaf thank you ;)

How big should my girl be at 5 weeks? shes looking awfully chubby, even her rib cage seems to be expanding?

We havent had it confirmed that shes pregnant, but everyone whos seen her swears shes got to be. So i could be panicking over nothing yet!

thanx again everyone, im sure i'll have more questions for ya

I also bought some rasberry leaves (never used it before) and the instructions for people say to use in the last trimester of pregnancy. I will start it on my bitch at 6 weeks.

The bitch carries the pups at first under her ribs, later on they just overflow into the abdomen, then about week before whelping the whole thing "drops". If she is chubby at 5 weeks, she is pregnant.

As others already said you must remain calm, or you will only upset your bitch. Place the whelping box for her in a quite dark corner, preferably in a room where other animals and small children do not have access to (at least temporarily). I would set the whelping box up about 2 weeks before the due date, i used to do it 1 week, but my last litter came whole week early! I place puppy pen around my whelping box and throw a rug or sheet over, making a sort of tent so the bitch feels secure there. If she is happy and relaxed all will go well.

You just keep the kettle boiling, make yourself a nice cuppa and relax, maybe we should all include some Valium in the whelping box (for us, NOT the bitch).

:)

thanks seraphina. I will try to keep calm!

I'm thinking of getting a play pen for the pups to run around in when they're a bit older.

What dogs do you have?

Another silly question. How do i know when shes had the last pup? what if there were more left inside her? Sorry to sound daft. I will be calm on the day, i need to get all my questions out before it comes ! :D I will get to work on the whelping box soon.

I will keep you all informed and put piccies on!! all cross ya fingers for me!

And again thank you all so much for not thinking bad of me! I know it shouldn't have happened!

just a warning here. my bitch amber hated her whelping room after she had her pups. she decided that she wanted them next to my side of the bed. bless her, she'd moved the whole litter there, so we ended up having to construct a makeshift pen around them

once shes had them, be very aware of her. some bitches will kill their pups if they feel a threat is present :( a friend had someone come in to read the meter. this guy just barged through to the conservatory, where the bitch was. in seconds she killed half the litter before paul could stop the bloke :(

hope all goes well, and enjoy :luck:

In humans you shouldn't have Raspberry Leaf until about 36 weeks until the pregnancy. This is because it can induce labour and obviously premature labour is not desired. This is a commonly known fact not a myth!

I was advised by Dorwest when Daisy had her litter to give rasberry leaves from 3 weeks pregnant till 2 weeks after the birth. Good luck with your babies. :luck:

good luck with the birth, I know what you mean about being worried for Tyra, hope all goes well, lots of pics when they arrive please :luck: :luck:
