My whippet puppy will soon be ready for me to pick up, he will be 9 weeks old. I am unsure whether to bring him home that weekend or wait till he is 11weeks old as I have a week off work then! I am very excited but of course want to do the best thing for my puppy!

Please help me make the right choice.

I think that 9 weeks is the ideal age for a puppy to start bonding with their new family although there is nothing against them being 11 weeks - he'll just be 2 weeks more set in his ways

Could you change your holiday week and bring it forward? It really is a must that you are there 24/7 for his first week, at least, so if you can't change it and the breeder doesn't mind keeping him for another 2 weeks then that will probably be the best way.

Hi, Welcome to the great world of whippets we have just added to our pack with little Fynn who was nearly 8wks old when we got him on Easter Sunday.I would make sure you are on your holidays before you get your pup :thumbsup: It has worked in well with school hols and then my holidays so Fynn can settle in to a routine of feeding and training which is so important to a young puppy.Good luck and have great fun

I agree with Jinny and Dave, you (or someone in the family) really MUST be at home 24/7 while they are still small and adjusting to life without Mum. I'd be tempted to bring the holiday forward as they change so much in those two weeks. It's important to be there both to keep them company and start housetraining - I had to have eyes in the back of my head with two pups at the same time but it was only three or four weeks before we were completely 'accident' free in the house - this would have been a much bigger problem if I'd had to keep going out and leaving them with paper to go on.

we have an 8 weeks old whippet puppy called lucy. we got her when she was 6 weeks old. luckily i had two weeks off for easter so it was great to have sometime to settle her in. whippets seem to be easier to settle than other dogs though. it will be hard to wait till 11 weeks though im sure you cant wait to get him.
