Where has my beautiful whippet puppy gone, he was there last week but he keeps disappearing. In his place I've seen a Pharoah Hound, with both ears pointing towards the sky, I've seen a Sloughi topline, I've seen his legs grow but his body stay the same size, I've seen his bum get higher than his front legs, I've seen him become very narrow and then become very broad, I've seen his face sore and swollen with his annoying teeth, I've seen him stand his ground with the big dogs then turn into Scooby Doo and run behind my legs when they look at him in the wrong way. On our walk this morning I saw him watching a squirrel and just for a minute it all came back again. Watching baby whippets grow is amazing.

Jenny (for some reason becoming soppy)

Ahh, so true Jenny. I feel just the same about my Holly. I can't believe it's her first show in two weeks time! (w00t) She's still my little baby though :huggles:

I don't know about amazing Jenny,i find it VERY stressful :sweating: (w00t)

A few weeks ago,i thought Bailey was the best thing since sliced bread, but if you could see him at the moment he's shot up on the leg,& his ears are all over the place

Cherry looks like a tube & her bum's higher than her front end,& Chrissy looks like a Hyena (w00t) ...................hence no photo's of them on here at the moment!!!

Might be reassuring for folks though alfyn!

if there were some odd 'while they grow' pics - followed by some 'all turned out ok in the end' shots....so that people new to growing whippies can see that they really do turn back into whippets in the end!

(once yours have finished growing, of course!)

Sounds like a good idea Urchin, think it's be a good idea to start a new thread on the subject! :D

Whippets are the most amazing creatures when it comes to growing - my theory is to pick your baby at 8 & 12 wks (I usually have them sorted before 12 wks - I pick construction but the heart also has a lot to play in it) then forget them until they are at least a year old.

If they stay lovely in the middle, that's a bonus. Sometimes, they just don't turn out & other times, they are superstars. I have let little midgets with ugly heads & no length go to pet homes and seen them a year later & kicked myself for not holding onto them!

My Lulu was an outstanding speciman for a pet home & at 8wks she suddenly "appeared", her first 12mths of life was fairly ordinary (she did have a major head injury at 10mths of age & couldn't walk, eat, drink...) After she became well again, we worked on getting her back in the ring & she went on to win her first BIS at 22mths of age, she is a multi BIS winner in the All Breeds & Specialty rings & has produced some top winning stock who have bred on also.

My puppies are about to hit the ring, they are 5mths old, we went away on holiday for 10 days & I came home & nearly passed out, they looked hideous, I was gutted. The dog sitter had them way to fat & it threw out all their shape, I leaned them up to where they should be & what a different picture it creates, I am now happy with where they are sitting for their age.

If the ears are sticking up, it may just be a teething thing, one of my puppies is flying one of hers & the litter mate isn't - just make sure you massage the crease a couple of times a day & you'll be right.
