A few years ago I rescued a whippet , I got her on the day she was booked to be PTS .

Later I managed to get a copy of her pedigree .

Yesterday I went on the whippet archives and discovered all about her .

I saw her pic when she was young ......

Pics of her siblings ......

And best of all discovered about her 3 litters .....

I saw their pics too and saw how successful they have all been here and abroad .

I was quite excited about what a star she is ......

What a fantastic website

It is a great site isn't it? How interesting to find all that stuff out? I went on there to find out about Roscoe and Grover's family links after we first went to reserve them and found it amazing that I could trace my dogs' family tree back to the late 1800s AND that the people in the past valued their dogs so much that they took photos at a time when most people couldn't afford to take pictures of themselves! I loved looking at the pics to see family resemblances and how the whippet's appearance has changed over time.

Amazing what you can find out from the Archives. How come she ended up as a rescue? I know I was very annoyed when I found out a bitch I bred had gone through whippet rescue and nobody told me, I would have had her back. That was years ago, I only found out because her new owner contacted me and asked if she could visit us. The little bitch took a few seconds before she realised where she was, then went potty, leapt into my arms, licking my face etc., and I hadn't seen her since she was 8 weeks old, and was then 4 years old. That was a happy ending, but I did give the person who bought her from me a ticking off for not letting me know she didn't want her any more. The reason was because she was barren and couldn't be bred from.

Sorry, gone right off topic

Sounds like you had an interesting day.

It's nice you now know all this about your Girl

so who is your whippet so I can look her up on the archives? Are you going to add her photo to the archives?

I'm glad you got her.

(btw, rescues typically destroy registration papers/pedigrees if they have them, not appreciating what pleasure it can be for the owners to learn these details)

The archives are good, but there are errors; it's all up to individuals to post information

It is time consuming. If you are going to post a dog's pedigree,it's best to check whether parents are on the archives and if not whether grandparents are on, etc as you won't be allowed to type in the dog's parents if they aren't already archived and you may have to archive the ancestors before you can list the progeny. If you don't understand what I mean, you haven't contributed to the whippet archives yet.

As I said she is a rescued whippet therefore I would not like to upset her breeder by putting her pedigree name on here .

Her photo is already on the whippet archives .

I won't be adding anything there as I only have pet dogs .

But I did find it very interesting

I love that site, we're so lucky to have something like that, most breeds don't have such a huge selection of data in one place.

I added my two just in case the owners of their litter mates add anything - I'm really nosey and I'd love to find out what they're up to and how they turn out. :)) Glad you found some good stuff on there too, Hula.

Awwww, isn't it lovely to discover information like that :D

Dina is such a star and she is so lucky to have you, Alison

It never fails to amaze me how puppies remember you when they left you at 8 weeks old - so lovely though to get sloppy kisses from a whippy you've bred and helped into the world :huggles:

That's made my mind up, I'm going to add my dearly departed whippets to the archive when I get 5 minutes. You never know who might have been related, and shows up further family we didn't know about.

the website is http://thewhippetarchives.net/

- easy to remember if you don't forget NOT to type in www!

I would certainly encourage anyone who has the time to add their dogs' details to the database (and also if possible, check that details about its siblings, ancestors and progeny are correct).

What you get out of it is info on your dogs relatives and pedigrees with photos. The fact that the database makes out pedigree forms could be very useful for breeders (there is even a test-mating pedigree facility). But the database info is only as good as what we put into it.

It was through whippet archives that we discovered that our oldst whippet Jasper is baby brother to Sue Greenwoods bitch Piper

Please please check any information you post, or that is posted about your whippets.

It is a valuable tool, but there are mistakes on there. The sad part about it, even if the breeder/owner enters details, anyone can change them.

I was just going to add the same thing Helen.

It is a fantastic tool - but as anyone can change any dogs details, it can mean the info is not always accurate. :-

I have been looking at the Whippet Archives today and it is really interesting.

I input Remmy's details, but I notice one of her Great-Grandparents isn't the same name as on her Pedigree Certificate. (I think her Certificate is incorrect, not the Archives).

Just added Louie's details. How interesting, found out his Great Grandfather was Best In Show at Crufts in 1992 - our claim to fame!
