My seven year old dog has a perfect round black dot in his eye below the pupil. I noticed it a few weeks ago. His eyesight seems to be fine. Does anyone know what this could be? It looks like the black in the middle of frogspawn!

It's a floater, nothing to worry about. One of mine had loads of them and they must have passed across her field of vision at times, because she would suddenly peer about looking for something only she could see.

My vet explained what they were, she lived to a ripe old age with no problems, she did go deaf though!!!!!!!!!!

I would get it checked by the vet next time you visit, just to be on the safe side but it's probably an iris cyst,Badger my whippet has three of them.

he did have four but one has dispersed on its own(this often happens with iris cysts).

The one which has dispersed actually was almost as big as his pupil in normal light.

The only thin g with iris cysts is that they CAN affect the pressure in the eye so it is worth looking out for any signs of pain or swelling.

Badger saw a specialist veterinary opthalmologist from France who diagnosed them as iris cysts.
