Whippet - Nails Worn Down And Bleeding

Yesterday our dog has been running in a garden with pavement and he has worn two nails on his back foot and the started to bleed.

We cleaned the nails in salt water and stopped the blood.

Today first thing whilst eating it bled again so we did the same thing. It has now stopped and so far this afternoon it is ok.

We have not bandaged but are keeping him to toilet walk only in the garden and bathing in salty water.
If it bleeds again the Internet seems to suggest flour?

Is there anything else we should do?

Does it just heel up quick?

Is it bleeding from the end same as if they had been cut into while trimming? This is really difficult to stop. What we do when we accidentally quick them is put a dab of superglue onto a cotton bud (this part is important as if you put it directly on the toenail you run the risk of gluing toes together), then gently dab onto the toenail to seal it. If it's the running on pavement that's caused it you will need to keep him from running on the pavement again in order to keep them from re-opening, but after a day or so should be fine.

I've never had a dog wear their toes down to bleeding level by just running in the garden What a nightmare.

Yes just like when trimming.

He obviously has weak nails!

He wont be playing in garden like that again, back to the fields and grass!!!!!

it not take long to heal keep it clean with a few day rest job done, i had a gsd whose claws was down low but mainly down to lots of exersize on concrete with bike but didnt take long like you say back to the field
