Hi

I thought I would share with you a poem I wrote today.

Double Trouble

Two of a kind

We like to play fight

All through the day

And into the night

A run round the garden

To muddy our feet

We’ll run in the house

And onto the suite

Give us some cardboard

Give us some paper

Anything to chew

That’s a good caper

We’ve got a ball

And toys of our own

There not half as much fun

As a chew on the phone

We’ll cover you in kisses

And nibble your toes

Wev’e just eaten worms

But nobody knows

Sweet little things

As good as gold

Not be long now

Til’ we do as we’re told.

Asleep in the basket

Laid down to rest

Thats when I like,

My whippet pups best!

Dawn Mason

Are there any more whippet poems out there?

Wendy maybe you could post Nicks poem.

Dawn

LOVE your poem.  Here is Nick's - I posted it on the old board, but for those of you who missed it...

I am a simple Whippet

and my needs are far and few

We'll start with a big, soft, warm bed

that you thought belonged to you.

A backyard with tall fences

where I can chase some things

like squirrels, chipmunks, bags and twigs

or anything with limbs.

A big long beach with miles of sand

that I can fly on through

so long as it's away from cars

('cause I would chase them too!)

Then onward to my favourite chair

- the comfiest I'll pick -

and whippet friends to share it with

(not many, five or six!)

I'll deign to curl up round your knees

to show that I approve

but if I am not comfortable

then you'll just have to move.

As long as I am not disturbed

I'll sleep for King and Country

but one step near the kitchen door

and you'll soon know who's hungry.

The first and last bites must be mine,

I get to lick all dishes

and leave just one crumb on your lips

for lots of doggie kisses.

And as the hour, it turns to late

and sleep-time's where we're heading

be sure that I will snuggle close

if I get all the bedding.

Just know whenever you're with me

this message clear I'll send:

You're truly someone special

when a Whippet is your friend.

Thought I'd have a go at a poem about a morning in the life of my whippet, Fred. I'm not very good at the rhyming poems, so I tried something else:

Before dawn, a light scratching sound

Paw nudging open bedroom door

Approaching on silent pads

Cold nose, persistently nudging those slumbering

Stealthily climbing into the collective warmth

of bodies beneath a warm quilt,

To curl up, nesting against the crook of legs,

an appreciative lick of thanks

Slow to waken, cocooned in a feathered cape

a reluctant stretch, two paws reach out,

two still planted in last night's dream.

Finally a late appearance in the kitchen below,

disdainfully inspecting rations in lowly bowls

to be rejected, unless offered from the plate of his worshippers,

then interest is kindled

Eyes cajole, a graceful paw, supplicating, entreating.

A more dignified exit to a comfortable seat,

a settee no less, more downey comforts

Not to be disturbed.

Then ears unfurl, head tilts, for what sound invades?

Shoes thud, coats rustle, keys klink.

Final prooof, the lead in hand.

A walk to be done

Tail swings in pendulum arcs,

a metronome to the excited pulse.

A fast pace to the park, a familiar route

Nothing missed.

Smells tasted, memorised, filed.

Cats appraised; lead not long enough!

Then free to run, charging to the left, then right,

skittering bursts of energy.

Finally, home again, warmth sought.

Warmth located, a radiator no less.

Cushions conveniently scattered,

to circle upon, once, twice and once again

A comforting ritual or a mathematical calculation?

Whichever, a sigh denotes comfort attained.

Eyes close, to dream again, but not too deep,

no sound to be missed.

How about a limerick?

There was a young Whippet called Frisky

Who developed a taste for Malt Whiskey

He went down on one knee

When he needed to pee

'Cos lifting his leg was too risky.

When last showing Fleur in the ring

She suddenly started to sing

Now look at me move

I'm into the groove

The judge of course gave her the win

What lovely poems, enjoyed reading them all

Lovely poems :) I liked the limerick too  Juley you wrote a really good one about Hero Whippet when he was a puppy, but since we moved I can't find it :( Don't suppose you can remember it nearly 7 years down the track?

I remember the bit " The wet patch by the video where I just had a wee" (w00t)

Heck...did I write one of those? :b I'd forgotten all about that. (w00t)

That was almost 5 years ago when Fred was a lot younger. Doesn't do much of the skittering about these days....
