Just a question about when to start racing a pup. I gave my 7 month old pup a trail a couple of weeks ago and she was realy up for chasing the lure when slipped from her coller. When should she be trailed from the traps and at what age do you start racing in "anger"

 Lakey

I started Tilly at about 7months.....

The first day i slipped from her collar and she chased the lure brill...

then i put her through an open trap a couple of times...

Next time i took her she was going through an open trap

Next time we tried trap door shut at front, she wasnt to impressed but i held her and she did ok, if a bit slow out the trap.....i did this for a while, everytime i tried to shut the door at the back she turned round and i had to shove her in..

In the end i just kept shoving her in a shutting the back door, and she is fine now as she knows she is coming out the front to chase the lure...

Oh and we didnt muzzle her to start, but she got away from me when putting her in the trap grabbed the lure and ended up on the other side of the field with it...

She is now muzzled and cleared for racing and she is nearly 14months..

She took to it really well, considering we have only been about 5 or 6 times o:)

i think that this is a question that creates thought, some people start there pups off around 6/7 months, and others prefer to wait until there nearer 9 months, its just down to the indervidual really, however i recently had a litter of pups and cut a long story short they were delivered by c section, by a new vet a our practice who i had not met before, it turned out that she used to work with greyhounds, so obviously i ended up having quite a few lengthy chats and she showed great interest in my pups, and she advised me that the bigger the pup was the longer you should wait before you start to trial it, as bigger dogs have larger growth plates, and because of the size these plates, they take longer to close, and if the pup was started too early it could cause permanant damage to a dogs bones.

Hiya Lakey she seemed nice and keen for the lure, there's no harm in getting her used to the traps whenever you are ready now it's good for her to get used to the noise, walking through ect it's best to go nice and slowly with it so as not to put her off, she didn't seem bothered by the noises though yesterday.

If you want to come to the club and school her you're always welcome :huggles:

BTW what does in "anger" mean  we don't have any cross whippets at out club :- "
