My whippet has a bad heart since dec last year after she presented with a cough, she has been on meds for all this time and nw she deloveped a really snotty nose thick discharge she had a swab and camera up her nose and both showed nothing, she was put on abs to try and calm it down but it has got worse the last few months like she has a bad cold, she has also lost a lot of weight.

She was back for another visit this morning at the vets an she was shocked at weight loss so she took bloods as she thought her organs had gone into failure ! but she rang to say they were all normal so shes going in tomorrow for more x-rays for her heart and chest to see whats going on?

Has anyone else got a whippet with a heart condition i was wondering what sort of symptoms they had and how it was managed ?

Such a worry i hate seeing her so thin and so tired all the time :(

Sorry to hear your whippet is having problems. :( I'm afraid I can't offer any advice, but hope the vet is able to find out the cause of her problem.

Hoping she feels better soon. :luck: :luck:

Sorry to hear your little girl is unwell.

Im afraid I cant be of any help but there is a topic called 'heart ecg and ultrasound' which was started just a couple of days ago by a member who's whippet has heart problems. May be worth contacting them.

Wishing your wee lady all the best.

Whippets Rule went through this last year and could probably give good advice.

Why don't you send a PM.

I am sure that she would be happy to offer some helpful advice. :luck:

A little update she had a blood count yesterday that came back normal so she went into day for x-rays on her chest and heart she also had her nose flushed out and a sample sent off for full in depth report.

Collected her at 5 tonight as she was put out while they did it and the vet showed me the x-rays she did say there was a change in the right side of her heart shes not sure if its down to the extra stress from the nasal thing and trying to breath and thats why shes lost so much weight or it could be a tumor on her heart :( shes not 100% sure so going to wait for the nasal samples to come back and if they if show anything then we know thats the cause if not it could be due to tumor ! so in a way i'm hoping and praying an infection shows up and its not the other she is only 7 so young.

I can't believe how quick shes gone down hill she was a normal whippet up untill xmas last year she then got better on meds but the last month has lost weight and developed this awful snotty nose.

My whippet Fred has a heart condition and is on vetmedin and frusemide daily. However, he is 14 years old. He's had this heart condition for a while but it wasn't until last winter that he developed a cough and had to go on to daily medication to help his heart and fluids. I've managed his condition fairly well for the last 6 months, but just recently he's lost an awful lot of weight and seems to be coughing again despite the medication. Sometimes his breathing seems laboured and he has a drippy nose but no congestion as such.

I can't really advise much....I can only sympathise...all is OK as long as the medication keeps things under control and at 14 years I think, 'Oh well, not a bad innings really'. Hope you manage to stabilise your whippet, it's distressing to see them unwell. I've just looked back and your whippet is not much older than 5. That seems unfair......wish I could be of more help!

Thankyou shes about 6 now coming up 7 she was a rescue so not sure on age but your right not fair!

she is thin and very snotty but shes eating well again now looking for food and loves her little walk we have horses on our own place so she loves that, she sleeps a lot and struggles to get up and down when sitting like her back legs are going, but saying all this she seems happy wags her tail gets her lead to go in the car..lol

Its just so strange she was fine up untill xmas then once she was diagnosed that was it she changed.

She is on 5 lots of meds at the moment two new ones last week to open the lungs up while shes so snotty to help her breath a bit more.

I am praying the snotty nose is due to an uppertract infection and not due to a tumor on her heart which i think is quite rare ?

Hi, A condition called Allergic Rhinitis is known in whippets, from mild to so severe that owners have considered euthanasia. Its a condition like hayfever in humans , the immune system acts to try and destroy the perceived invader. This can be House Dust Mites , tree pollen ( seasonal) or something unknown.

The nasal passages become inflamed and the dog produces copious amounts of mucous , secondary infection can be present.

Its a difficult condition both to diagnose and treat , antihistamine dosnt seem to have much success , steroids can be tried if all else fails

Your Vet would need to advise on any treatment

So it could be something unrelated to the heart condition and might be worth mentioning to your vet
