Hello All:

I'm new here and came to look for any information on radial nerve damage in dogs. My whippet, Slim, was hit by a car on Dec 22. He did damage to his front left leg. The nerves are damaged and, as a result, he can't walk on it. He can feel something in parts of the leg but the main issue is with the motor skill that allows him to place his paw in the correct position. He can't position the paw. Instead, he drags it and it curls under when he walks. He's doing amazingly well on 3 legs! He's back to his normal activity level and can run and jump with other dogs.

The neurologist said she doesn't hold out much hope for any recovery as the damage is quite significant to the nerves. I am doing acupuncture with him and plan to continue that for at least another 4 treatments before reviewing his progress. I massage and do stretching exercises with the damaged leg to prevent it from stiffening. Other than that, he lives life as normal.

Has anyone had experience with this kind of devastating condition? I know the ultimate choice will be whether to amputate or not but I want to do all I can to save his leg.

I have reason to believe that some change is occurring. Sometimes when he sleeps and twitches, the damaged paw twitches too. That never happened in the initial weeks. As well, when I massage the paw pads, I can feel a faint grip as I do it. It may be time that's needed for the healing to occur and I'm prepared to give it.

I would appreciate any stories, therapies, and/or opinions on nerve damage anyone might have.

Thank you!

Sheena

hey hunny and first of all welcome to K9! im so sorry to hear about ur dog i hope the acupuncture works for him. a friend of mine had a cat with the same problem also on one of his front legs, and there is a good chance that ur dog will get the use of his leg back intime and it sounds like ur doing the right things for him to give him the best chance. unfortunaly after about 7 months of trying different treatments becca had to have the leg removed as nothing worked for her cat, on the bright side animals do alot better when they lose a limb than people do and the cat lives a full and happy life and is just as mental and manouverable as before.

good luck :luck:

this sounds promising.if hes able to move the paw then it could be that there are nerve impulses able to get through.id persist if i were you.if i had a penny for every time a vet has written an animal off only to have to eat their words! good luck :luck: :luck: :luck:
