Makes you wonder how they all got their figures? slightly different in the Daily Mirror today:

Whippet named most expensive dog to look after

They are fast, sleek and lovable but the whippet will also race away with their owners' cash.

The pet, traditionally raced in the North, are the most expensive dog to look after.

Esure Pet Insurance estimated they cost £4,600 a year for vet bills, food and other expenses. Second are bassett hounds, at £4,400 a year, its survey also revealed.

Esure's Nikki Sellers said: "Today's household pets are treated more like members of the family."

Costliest breeds: 1. Whippet; 2. Bassett Hound; 3. Beagle; 4. Chihuahua; 5. Dalmatian; 6. Dachshund; 7. Poodle; 8. Pug; 9. Doberman; 10. Jack Russell.

Blimey!! I know us whippet owners like to keep buying lovely coats, collars, leads, toys, etc ... but £4000+ per year???

Perhaps it should say Whippets are the most spoilt breed

Absolutely ridculous!!!! If that was true I only just earn enough to pay for my whippets so where do they think I get the money for mortgage, bills, food etc?

I noticed that the figures varied quite a lot between sources - I hope this doesn't mean the insurance companies will use it as an excuse to put up the premiums. I saw on one site that it said owners spend £500 on grooming a year :D errrrrm! I spend approximately - nil!!!

Mind you, judging by you mad lot on here, the figure for luxuries is probably correct :teehee:  I am a very mean mummy though - mine have precisely 1 collar, 1 coat and 1 harness each  oh and Lenny has a muzzle although I suspect he'd rather not!

Oh dear, perhaps I should have read this before I went onto eBay and bought another collar

OUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! there is definately no chance of me getting another whippet on that basis :teehee: :teehee: I thought it was down to the whippets being thoroughly spoilt with collars, blankets, beds and coats, more coats and more coats (w00t) Bailey has contributed to the insurance payouts  Best breed ever though

………… and still insurance companies wont insure whippets that race

I guess if they are this expensive insurance companies simply cant afford our precious expensive whippets

What a total rubish; even with all the coats and fancy collars, Whippets cannot possibly compete with breeds that need constant clipping, or breeds that may require expensive operations to fix their hips, eyes etc. Anyway, surely all the insurance companies are interested how much dogs cost in veterinary bills, not accesories.

One thing that would bring the over a life span cost up for Whippet is that they do live longer than many other breeds. But feeding costs for a Whippet, even if I feed only human consumption grade meat, would be not anywhere near that of say Basset. OK if I count all the chewed up furniture and expensive shoes we might get to about 1/4 of the estimate :)

Unless, of course there has been dramatic increase in health problems, and Whippets are not any longer the very healthy breed we think they are?

Thats it.......my four are up for re-homing......Scruples here they come

As some of you know I work in a vets and I can say that IMO labs and X breeds are the most expensive and frequent visitors .

Ok when a whippet injures itself then it can be expensive. But in all the 25+ years Ive had whippets I bet I havnt spent £4,000.00 in total

Nothing to due to collars coats etc, this is based on vet visits and insurance payouts and yes it will push up cost of cover for the breed, i dont think its the breed i think its more down to the owners, every one should be aware that insurance does not give you carte blanche to present your dog at the vets with every minor problem without it having an effect on future premiums, if your paying £10.00 amonth (£120.00 a year) but spending ££££££ a year something has to give

Remember vets feed on the backs of the worried well i recently took a 8 week pup that had jumped of a chair and pulled its shoulder i had given it a couple of days total rest but he was still limping i know nothing was broken through manipulation but the shoulder was an obvious sore point, my vet was not in so i saw 1 of the partners who manipulated him and agreed that nothing was broken but said she wanted to xray????? when i challenged her decsion asking why if nothing was broken and soft tissues damage does not show on xray she became slightly flustered said and if that was my descision on my "head be it" Metacam was given pup made a full recovery, if i had gone with xray if would have been £100+ plus a return visit etc.

Do you know the question she asked prior to suggesting the Xray ??-

"Are you insured"

Nikki Sellers seems to have a habit of working within different departments in Esure and making outlandish statements as googling will reveal.

Personally I suspect it's more likely a rue to get people into owning this breed by raising their 'status' they've also got a nice long longevity and are relativley free from genetic defect. Just the kind of profitable breed for insurance companies.

It's no different than the bilge she came out with when she was 'head of home insurance' about women leaving the house in £1050 worth of gear every morning. If you think everyone else is indulging in something luxurious then you'll be more inclined to spend a little more yourself and in turn your insurance company benefits from you paying out for premiuims on expensive individual items.

We have 20 whippets and a greyhound, I seriously doubt our annual bill for them is £98,000 and that's including the racing, swimming, injury checks etc etc.

Tony might have a rough idea on the annual cost so I'll ask and it'll probably be a tad more accurate than Nikki Sellers statistics!

I think these people just bandy numbers around. I cannot believe that such a sound breed as the whippet with none of the horrendous inbred, congenital problems of other breeds, is the most expensive to own. Compare it to the breeds that suffer with congenital skin, eye, respiratory and hip problems - to mention just a few, and the giant breeds that suffer cruciate ligament problems, it seems non-sensical. I wonder if they have taken into account life span?

Sad though it is, I have my 'Whippet' accounts for the last 17 years

The average age when they came to me was 4 years old and all have been neutered of spayed and lived to be an average of 13 years.

The cost per dog over 9 years £6,675 or £741 per year

The average cost for vets only with no insurance including Speying, Neutering and routine vaccinations, injuries etc. £3,780 per dog over 9 years or £421 per dog

I think that they got their decimal point in the wrong place when adding up the cost of keeping a whippet :teehee:  :D

My last vet started asking if my dogs were insured when I took them in. Strangely enough, the only one I had insured (Toddy), required far more tests than those that were not insured. Toddy was insured because he was a menace to himself being totally hyperactive. Now that he is calming down, I intend to end his insurance later this year. I will stick to my monthly savings account for vets bills.

Why an earth not????? Thats like saying your not able to insure your horse to race!!!!!! Well I've learnt something new today ;)

Well i am going to have to see my boss for a substantial pay rise as my 6 are going to cost me close to £28,000 this year according to the figures quoted!!!

Strange that of the top 10, only 1 is a coated breed & I would think one with coat would need more grooming cost than one without??

I've asked Tony how much does he think the average whippet costs he replied F all!! (w00t)

I should point out he'd had a few tipples when I asked!! :teehee:

Might be a good time to get the cheque book out and ask for that hydrotherapy pool!!! :shifty:
