:D morning all. Well am taking my two girls on a boating trip from saturday. I just wondered if anyone else had taken theirs on a barge before. They dont like travelling in cars much and i was hoping they wouldnt get seasick on the boat. Hopefully they will just love the travel up and down the canal with as much walking as i can do with them. If anyone has taken their dogs on a barge before can you tell me how it went. As i want them to have as great a time as possible. thanx

I've never taken mine on a boat so I'm not much help!

All I can say is keep a careful eye on them and make sure they're on a lead at all times to keep them safe

I hope the weather is nice for you :D

Be very careful, and they'll love it.

Took my Cavalier on a Barge once, she fell off the boat and into a lock trying to follow me!

She survived by being scooped up by my uncle.

i'd advise to try and get them the doggy safety swim vests.

have a great time and make sure to take loads of piccies to post on here ;)

am sure you will have a great time-if you want to know about whippets and boats read 'narrow dog to carcassonne'

My in-laws have a canal boat and my boys have been on it once, just for a day though. I had to make sure they were on a lead at all times as I was so paranoid about one of them jumping over board! They seemed happy enough and spent most of it snoozing, so nothing new there :D

Have a lovely time

A friend of ours took their whippet on a barge a couple of years ago. They had 2 whippets but 1 was a 4 month old pup she came to stay with us as they didn't think a barge was the right place for her.

They took a couple of baby gates with them and put them in the door ways to stop Copper getting out onto the deck himself and he wore a little life jacket all the time except in the night. They did say Cooper seemed to enjoy being on the barge.

sounds like a lovely relaxing time you'll have, saw some doggy life vests on e-bay recently.

There won't be much swell on the canal boat so hopefully seasickness won't be a problem.

Ours would be the softy to fall overboard, she's a bit dim, but also nervous so maybe wouldn't go near the edge.....have a great time !

We have a narrowboat, and our 3 dogs (2 x Whippets and a Collie X) love it. Obviously you need to be very sensible when going through the locks (potentially very dangerous if they fall in then). I always shut Dolly and Remmy (the whippets) inside the boat when we go through locks. Bobby sits on the back with OH while I work the locks!! When we are travelling, I usually sit up at the front with Dolly and Remmy and they love to watch the world go by.

They have all fallen in at some point, but not normally when travelling as they seem very aware of the water. Bobby has fallen off the back a couple of times, and slipped off the gang-plank. He also jumped off once when we were going under a bridge, and we didn't realise immediately, which was a bit of a worry until we found him!! They have fallen in from the towpath when one has bumped another, but they just swim to the side with no problem and we pull them out. We have been narrowboating for many years now (wouldn't want you to think these incidents happen just in one holiday!!)

It's a great holiday for dogs as you can spend lots of time walking along the towpaths. When we stop for the night, we usually try to moor up somewhere quiet in the middle of nowhere. It's so tranquil.

The book mentioned Narrow Dog to Carcassonne is a great read - really recommend it.

Hope you have a great time and I'm sure your dogs will love it.
