I currently own two whippets one four and a pup of six month both of which are and will be working dogs.

I have just been offered a eighteen month/two year old Border terrier bitch for none or very little money which isnt from a working home.

I have always been a strong believer in using terriers two flush rabbits for whippets or lurchers to course and I would like a terrier for this purpose.

MY DILEMA is

1........I also want another whippet some time in the near future and if I got the border, I would end up with four dogs in the same house and the wife probibly wont stand for this

2.... Would the border terrier work with some encouragement at such a late stage

3.....Would the terrier be ok with the two whippets I already own as terriers can be fiesty to say the least, though borders are quiet compered to other terriers

4.... I realy like border terriers

WHAT DO YOU LOT THINK ?

Hi Lakey

in my experiances with Terriers Borders are later at entering to quarry than say Jack Russels ect, most Borders are best left till about 18-24 months old as they generaly seem a bit reluctant to seriously work before that age.

so at this age it would be perfect to bring on it just depends what kind of up bringing its had though?.

asw for your wife? try buying her a bunch of flowers

Whispers best friend is a border, he is 4 and she is just over 1, he

has taught her to catch rabbits this year and now she loves it !!

Hi Lakey. I`ve found over the years most terriers will work given the chance. I`ve always kept Russells myself, but a mate of mine had a Border , it took it`s time getting

started , but once it did it entered to all legal quarry at that time including fox .

if you`re looking for a bushing dog you won`t go far wrong, get it out with the whippies and it`ll soon get the idea. What`s wrong with having 4 dogs anyway? Get talking your missus round :D

Your whippeys will probabaly settle ok with the Border, they both seem pretty good natured so I don`t think you`ll have a problem . Plenty of thick cover on an old railway line near here to try it out

my whippet pup and my terrier (border cross)

Hey Lakey

Not really knowledgable about the coursing side of things but have 2 whippies, a Vizsla and a Bichon and of course a cat

So tell the Wife they all keep each other company and are really no extra hassle

Hope you get your newbie

:D

it can be a mistake to take on too many dogs paul. you have a pup in training at the mo and soon a terrier that needs starting too. my advice would be too not take on another dog especially a cast off, most seem to bring problems with them. just wait a few months and get polly out in the lamp then there will be no need to own a terrier. regards sparky, this is just my oppinion regarding this matter

Just to let you know that the terrier is staying with its present owner.

If had been anyother type of terrier I wouldn't have ofered it a home, but as it was a border i thought i could have given it a good home with the whippets.

May get one some time in the future but I'm not in any hurry
