Anyone got any input as to the temperament of whippet x jack russells?

They seem to be two completely opposite temperaments...?

would be grateful to any anecdotal info, as am considering a puppy of this type..

thanks everyone.

I can't give any anecdotes - all I know is I wouldn't want to live with a terrier temperament (even though I really like Jack Russells) and I don't know why anyone would want to cross a whippet with one.

I've got one, bless him. This is Oliver:

He and the rest of his litter were the product of an accidental mating, I think, and they were all given to a rescue to rehome. It's because of Oliver that I went onto whippets, cos I love that side of his personality.

He's a lovely, loving boy and the most obedient dog I have! :- " I often "lose" him on walks because he's walking in my footsteps and I can't see him with a casual glance over my shoulder!

On the negative side, he can be a barker. He's also very demanding for attention, much more so than the others. I'm talking extreme demanding here, not just wanting a cuddle. He "needs" a cuddle or he'll burst! (w00t) He has a nervy character but whether that's him or the terrier in him I couldn't tell you. :)

You can read more about Oliver here on his own website! Oliver's page

I should add that he's 1/2 whippet, 1/4 Jack Russell and supposedly 1/4 labrador, but I've yet to see any labrador traits in him! (w00t)

Ive known one or two Whippet/Russell xs, they have been very nice dogs to use for rabbit work because the Russell will do as its told a bit more than a Whippet, well mine anyway! And you get a very fast tenacious dog if you WANT a hunter. I would'nt have one as a pet pet because they are sooooo busy and slightly wild they need masses of work or play. Im not mad on crosses of any sort especially dogs of differing temperement. a friend has a Lab/spaniel, the poor thing never knows weather to sit and stay or rush around the bushes when they take it out shooting.

That's why Oliver as a "mostly whippet" works so well in the pet sense - he's not hyper and is very happy to chill out with the others. He loves the "whippet pile" too!

My friends had one and she was a lovely dog with a good temprement, so good infact they are looking for another.

I often went out walking with them and our dogs got on really well. Her working ability was outstanding and my dogs miss her bushing all the rabbits from the blackberry bushes. She was 15 when she died.

If anyone knows of such a litter please let me know.

well that's very interesting indeed, thankyou everyone. this puppy is on the dog rescue pages at the moment. he is super cute, but I did wonder a bit--- am not a great terrier fan, and am looking for a family pet.

I would assume the Lab traits in him are most probably his great obedience and very lovingside! :p

As my experience of Jacks are they can be loving but tend to lack a bit on the obedience,Bert our Jack used to go conveniently deaf whenhe was sniffing other dogs or away on his investigations (w00t)

Still love Jacks though!

And Oliver is just sooooo cute

In my experience when they're running around they're running and running and running ... and running .. and running ... and running ... and running ... ... and running and running ... ...

You get the picture lol and like Oliverpliers said they can be quite demanding - but absolutely adoreably loveable at the same time !!!

Oliver is just ... :huggles: ... awww ...

gosh, it isnt easy trying to choose a family pet that's comptible with everyone and your circumstances , is it?

it reminds me of buying a house - falling in love all the time with impractical ones and not being able to afford the big ones and trying to imagine how it will suit everyone for years to come..

Nice to see you finding out about certain dogs before you take the final plunge though  Far to many people just rush headlong into buying then realise later it might have been a mistake, Good Luck in finding what you and your family want :luck: and dont forget lots of pics when he or she arrive.

hi, i had a whippet russel cross bull terrier that was a excelent family dog and a great worker aswell. she would not stop moving and was very highly strung demanding quite a lot of my attention, but that aside i would have another. regards.

Paula, thankyou. I must admit though it is giving me brain fatigue trying to second guess what will suit. :sweating:

People do rather like to scare you when you are just putting your feet on the path, dont they. I'm trying to add a pinch of salt to the nay sayers and a reality check on the head in the clouds types.

:teehee:

So if I go for the whippet terrier cross will he be robust and good enough off lead to play in the park with the kids, or will he just drive me crazy, bark the house down, and demand my full attention all the while when everyone else is out... :b

I don't own a Whirrier, but have owned Whippets (still do) and Jacks, and I have found them both to be very biddable dogs,so I can't see why a cross of the two should not make ideal family pets. ;) I know as a general rule of thumb that Terriers can be one of the more noisier breeds and Whippets being a Sight-Hound can sometimes be a bit head strong especially regarding recall if chasing something :- " but then all breeds will have some sort of drawback, none of them are angels o:) I think a Whirrier will give you and your family years of pleasure and will be able to play for hours on the go,or be equally happy curled up in front of the fire! :D

Good Luck with the search :luck:

P.S Another good cross to consider is Bedlington/Whippet,I know a lot of people who have these and find them very admirable

I"m sure someone on k9 are due a litter of Bedlington/whippets remember seeing the pics, but cant remember who it was, sorry but they would make a lovely family pet.

Hi, i have no experience of a jrt, but have a lakie x irish terrier- and she is the most chilled out girl ever!! I was expecting the worst, as she's my first terrier, but she is better than i could ever imagine. She turns a deaf un when she smells something nice- as do whippets, but her recall is excellent.

ooooh. :)) A bedlington/ whippet.

I wonder who is due a litter of that cross? Does anyone know?

That sounds a perfect combination.

When we went to Discover Dogs Exhib, the whippets and the bedlingtons were our favourite dogs.

(Well, the italian greyhounds were stunning too, but a bit bone china for children to play with.)
