WHISPER
**UPDATED: JANUARY 2013**
Location: Foster home in Hertfordshire.
Key Points: Very easy-going, friendly, healthy & spritely for her age, content in herself, dog savvy, becoming housetrained.
Please say hi to dear old Whisper. She is a 12 year old ex-racing greyhound lady who has sadly spent every one of those 12 years in an outdoor kennel until coming to us just a month ago. No one deserves to find a loving forever home more than Whisper, and we dearly hope someone can offer it soon. Surely 12 years is a long enough wait!
~ Personality ~
Generally: Affectionate, loves people, content in herself, asks for nothing.
Whisper is… well, just a little bit ‘wonky’. She has a few scars, a slightly kinked front leg from an old injury, a pair of ears that have a mind of their own, and her pupils aren’t quite equal in size. However despite all this, Whisper carries an inner strength that belies her years. It’s truly inspiring to see. She is healthy and alert and knows her own mind. Once she has sorted where her bed, cuddles and food supply comes from, she is 100% contented and happy to potter around, enjoying life.
Whisper has shown herself to be friendly and affectionate with people, and loves a good scratching session. She has always been treated kindly by people and this shows in her easy-going, happy-go-lucky manner. Whisper is also inquisitive and interested in the brand new environment she now finds herself in, and is eager to learn what a house is all about. She knows her name and now knows the basic daily routine of her fosterers.
~ Medical Issues ~
Whisper has been given a full veterinary check and passed with flying colours. The vet certified that she is amazingly healthy for her age, and she has no current medical condition. Even her teeth are ok! Obviously due to her age, Whisper should not be doing the 100m sprint, but she is used to daily walks and really looks forward to them. Whisper is too old to risk being neutered, and potential owners are welcome to talk to us about any concerns they may have due to this.
~ In the Home ~
Generally: House savvy, becoming housetrained, ok with canine company, quiet and undemanding, needs calm relaxing home.
Whisper has been in a foster home for about a month now, and her progress is nicely steady considering her amazing age. She is grasping the concept of ‘housetraining’ and it is developing very well. Right now she just needs frequent reminding to go outside, especially after eating and drinking. She is also now clean through the night. However we don’t think Whisper would be able to adjust to holding it for more than 4-5hrs during the day, so ideally she needs a home where she will have human company throughout the day with only the odd exception. Whisper would also be happiest in a quieter home without young children or boisterous dogs to disturb her. She deserves the opportunity of a quiet retirement home where she can learn to relax on comfortable duvets and sofas, and be doted on regularly. If you think you can offer this to Whisper, please contact us.
~ Other Animals ~
Generally: Dog savvy, best with older dogs.
Whisper is great with other dogs in that she doesn’t really take much notice of them! At her age, one can't be dealing with young rambunctious pups! She has met other dogs of all sizes, and may give a brief sniff hello before continuing on her way. She is sharing her foster home with 2 mannerly greyhounds and is no bother at all with them.
Despite her age, Whisper definitely knows what cats are and would give chase if given the chance. As such, she is not suitable to live with cats.
~ Out and About ~
Generally: Walks to heel, good for pottering around, learning to travel in car.
Whisper loves her daily walks and needs them to keep herself fit and healthy. However she is a bit of a ‘plodder’ and is happy to go for twice daily pottering-about rather than a 30 minute brisk trot. She likes to stop at random moments and literally smell the roses, and at her age we feel she is completely entitled to! Whisper can get car sick if travelling for long periods of time. Her foster mum is working with her on this by taking her on frequent short trips, and she is improving.
Whisper would be a fantastic companion for an older family who are at home most of the day but who perhaps need the incentive to get out for some fresh air twice a day.
~ Greyhounds as Pets ~
In general greyhounds are calm, mannerly dogs that are well used to being handled. They can fit very well in to a wide range of different lifestyles and usually adjust to the home life very quickly. Their soft, easy going nature often makes them ideal to live in a family with children, while their love of lazing around and low exercise requirements can make them perfect for the elderly.
~ Where Am I? ~
Whisper is currently being fostered in Hertfordshire, UK. She can be homed anywhere in the UK provided we have a homechecker available, but please note that you will be required to travel to her foster home to meet her.
~ Want To Adopt Me? ~
Whisper is vaccinated, microchipped, de-flea'd and wormed and a homecheck will be required as part of the adoption procedure. As mentioned, due to her age Whisper is not suitable to be neutered, so if going to a home with another male dog, that dog must be neutered. She most also be kept away from male dogs when in season. You are very welcome to talk to us about this in further detail.
If you are interested in adopting Whisper, you can contact me (Tam) via email: tam@kerrygreyhounds.co.uk, or speak directly to Bronwen by phoning: 075 000 62648. Emails are usually replied to within 24 hrs.
There is an application form for adopting a Kerry Greyhound, and we will ask you to fill it in as the first step in the adoption process. To speed up this process, we recommend you do this before emailing/calling. You can find the form, as well as further information on our homing procedures, on the Adoption Page: http://s300889640.websitehome.co.uk/uk/adoption.html.
Thank you.

Each dog is neutered, vaccinated, & microchipped before being adopted (unless stated otherwise).
We assess the suitability of all home offers, and we have homed greyhounds in all corners of the UK. If interested in one of our hounds, please feel free to contact us via the following:
