At a Ch show this year an exhibitor put their fawn Whippet on the table only to be told by the judge that the dog was a non-standard colour for the breed.

I wonder when this judge last read the Whippet breed standard if they ever have?

Some judges get too caught up in the bull and miss the real point altogether

The judge should of been reported to the KC. I think a small amount of "re training" is in order. On the other hand how correct is the case?

Which Championship Show was this and who was the judge in question?

Jenny

Hi Katana,

I'm intrigued! can you give us any other info. ???

From a curious novice viewpoint, what does happen when a judge disqualifies a dog? do they have to explain there and then why they are doing so or is it left to the steward? Can you dispute the decision and possibly get your money back? - particularly as in this case, if it is as it seems, the judge has not judged to the standard.

Rachel

I certainly would have told him/her thtat he/she was mistaken and quoted the line from our standard to him/her.

Given the fact that fawns/fawn brindles are the predominant colours in the rings in the UK - where has this judge been living - under a rock?

I think this must be a wind up :teehee:

A judge can disqualify a dog if it nasty and/or aggresive and is not ITO `fit for purpose `

Either a wind-up or bull$#!t.

Maybe a wind-up just to get some conversation happening?

Not a lot of participation on this board anymore. Lots of "views" and not many responses on most topics.

So even if this was a wind-up it didn't get many people going.

Not wrong. What happened to the good old days. A time when you could predict who was going to win, & be right. When you coud say "your dog's photo makes it look like a pet," none of this lovey stuff. Or when you could say your mind with out it being edited.

Ok- try these for measure.

Real gripes about judges of our breed.....

Number one would be the silly judges who want to throw hankies etc at the feet of every dog looking for ear sets and expression.....

Number two would be the nutters who want to pull the tail under the belly and then back over the topline to reach the pin bone on the hip- I'd always though the standard said something about the tail reaching to at least the hock....

And Third the ocassional judge who wants to judge the whippet soley on the stack and an out and back....

But my favourite of all time would be the supposed whippet specialist at the Melb Royal some years ago who had the biggest whippet classes of her life and so when juding portions of each class would write numbers down on a piece of paper. When the whole class (up to 20 odd dogs) moved around she spent her time looking at the piece of paper and up at the handlers exhibit numbers to find what she liked when she first saw them- the poor old dogs didn't get a look in. seriously mad and inept that one!!

Measuring the tail under the hind leg up to the pin bone has always been one way of measuring, plus the down to the hock. Nothing strange about it.

It's not done so often now I know, but it used to be some time ago!!!!

On colour, perhaps "new" all rounders at open shows are so used to seeing brindles and brindle and whites in the dog press, they think fawn is not right. Pity they don't read the standard.

Or, this is a wind up. lol.

Funnily enough the last 2 shows i've been to the judges both did

that and being new to showing i had to ask someone afterwards

what they were doing :D

Im used to down to hock method.

The more I think about the original question the more I think it has to be a wind-up. Having looked through the list of judges so far this year I can't imagine any of them saying it and in addition I notice there has been no further post by the original poster.

I'm well aware that some of the oldies used to judge tail length this way but it doesn't make it right. If the standard says that the tail should reach at least to the hock why not just check it's length the most natural way. Still haven't seen a decent whippet judge pull the tail under the belly yet.

You can always pick when they are judging. The give away is the "mother ship" in the car park. (w00t)
