Hi, I'm new to this forum and glad to have found somewhere that specialises in the gorgeous whippets - hurrah

However, lovable as my little Sol is, he has a really horrible habit of eating, or playing with my other dogs poo!!! I have tried feeding them all corgettes as I heard that was a deterent but it didn't work.

I pick up the poo from the garden at least twice a day, but he is a monster and always manages to find some. The last thing I want from his a kiss :x

Any suggestions as to how I can stop him doing it????

Thank you x

 and :x

Have a browse through FAQ - this topic has come up a couple of times before and I think several helpful suggestions have been made. You might find other topics to interest you there too, lots of stuff on exercise, feeding, pet insurance, you name it - it's probably there

Link to horrible habits (eating faeces) topic

Hope you find something to help :luck:

Thanks for the info, will have a good browse

Thanks everyone for your comments.

Even though he is a dirty little boy, it doens't put me off whippets. He is my first, I have two other dogs - a Beagle and a Large Munsterlander. The Munsterlander is a lovely big dog but exceptionally boisterous and highly strung. The Beagle is gorgeous but she is very single minded and greedy  But as for the whippet - well I am totally converted. Just need to persuade my husband to allow me another one he he

Thanks again everyone - will have to just brush his teeth at night before he gets into bed with us ;)

Garlic tablets should help!

That may help eating his own.

Is he a good eater? In my experience it is the really greedy dogs that eat poo, or dogs that had to compete for their food with lot of other dogs. They just gobble up what ever looks vaguely like food before anybody else has a chance.

Eating rabbit/sheep/horse manure is bit different, quite natural way getting some predigested veg :)

To start with I would just growl at him and maybe make some diet changes, feed him separately from the other dogs.

Hi Seraphina :D

I have growled at him and told him he is dirty when I catch him doing it. He does not have to compete for his food as I stand and watch them eat their dinners to make sure no plate swopping goes on ! He is on NatureDiet and a mixer biscuit so he should be getting all he needs. He does not wolf down his food, he is not particularly greedy and always inspects any treats he is given to make sure I am not trying to feed him poison :p

The strange thing is that it is only the big dogs poo that he eats?? He does not eat anything when we are out and about, it is only the big dogs stuff that he particularly likes. They are all on the same diet so it is not like he is being denied anything. Is it some sort of dominance thing???

i know somebody who had the same problem with a whippet, they tried different things with diet and in the end they brought a light muzzle and put it on her whenever she went in the garden.

It didnt take too long and it broke the habbit, she is now fine without a muzzle.

might be worth a try

Hi..yes lovely habbit..eww I have tried many things to deter one of our dogs from doing it without much luck. A vet friend of mine suggested pinapple..raw or tinned in their food..and to my surprise it works!!! Once digested it gives the poos an odd smell which to them isnt nice and so far no attempts to eat them have been made! Its just annoyiong that our cat wont eat pinapple as their poos seem to be a fav too with our dog but at least half the battle has been won!!!! Hope this helps

My lady ( (w00t) ) whippie eats dog poo sometimes.......how much pineapple should I be feeding her and how often......!?

She is so beautiful but its just :x when she does it........!

Pineapple certainly seems worth a try - shall buy some today and starting hiding it in their food he he he :D

Secondly I will try the garlic - as I said before he sleeps in bed with us and garlic breath from the dog might be hard to contend with - suppose it is better than his normal breath though eh ;)

Thanks everyone. xx

Pineapple worked for Tetley, i bought the tinned chunks in juice and put 3 or4 chunks in their bowls mixed in with their other food :)

The garlic tablets won't give her smelly breath

Crikey that was a thorough article!! Thank you. From reading it I think it is purely a pleasure driven thing that he does as he is on NatureDiet with an added vitamin tablet that I get from the vets which is an alround supplement. The only thing I haven't tried yet is the pineapple and the muzzle. Don't fancy the muzzle as it is only the big dogs stuff he eats at home - and that is when I can't get to it first

Thanks again for all the suggestions x

Hi, I am also a newcomer to whippets and my little so called ladies both eat poo. I have to hold minnie whilst poppy is pooping as she likes to eat them fresh. Nice!!!!

:x :x
