Just sorting through my show entries - and realising how quickly the entry fees mount up and I am trying to make some decisions about which ones to go to.

Does anyone know anything about Albert Simmons? I presume he is an allrounder, but has he given CCs in whippets before, and if so to whom?

Might help to have a rough idea of the type he prefers. :thumbsup:

Bert and his ex wife Claire were mainly whippet people far as I know . although I think he had Borzios too . Any how hes` a hound man , All the advice i can give you is that when he judged Manchester 1994 he gave the ccs to Nevedith Justa Jesta and Nevedith Justa Jenie , , Mayzee won Limit :wub: , i in 1996 Midland whippet he gave them to bcc Birkonbrea Forever Love , RCC Juneric little model Mayzee was 3rd oin Open :wub: and in 1999 Bath he gave them to Dcc Benroy Brilliant once more rdcc Dumbrition dReam Lover and the BCC Nevedith Veefa Vanity and RBCC to Chatwig Chanause to Exhurst .

Looking at `colours` , he placed fawns and brindles . plus partie colours and I know he and Claire in the past have had blacks , so there you go , Hope that helps :wacko: w

Jan Fiers has produced a book with the CC results for the previous shows where CC were awarded by all the CC judges. Useful along with the SYWC results book.

Is it my imagination or are the entries closing closer together this year? As for entering 3 and 4 dogs that is a thing of the past for me Im afraid, I did look at the cost and frightened myself despite the fact I earn more now than ever. I just dont like wasting money unless it is on good whiskey, food and a Toyboy :thumbsup:

I think this is totally bizarre (w00t) Are you lot saying that certain judges will always pick certain kennels and certain colours, and this would deter you from entering a comp?

It makes a mockery of choosing the best dog according to breed standard and condition How do you all feel about it when some-one wins and you KNOW your dog, or some-one else's is better? Not being funny, just really genuinely interested :thumbsup:

It's not just that though Joanna - it's also that there are different 'types' of whippets - slightly different shape, or bone - all within the standard (some people call it a Northern Whippet/Southern Whippet divide). So when Champ shows are costing £20+ per entry you may not want to go under a judge who's preferred type isn't close to yours, and save your money for one you know prefers your type.

That's not a bad thing - it's just being informed.

You have to make a decision somehow (unless you are in a position to go to all the shows with all your dogs! (w00t) ) so it may be made by deciding if he/she is a judge you would like to go under, if it is a show/venue that you enjoyed going to in the past, if you can afford the petrol money, if someone is going that it would be fun to travel with, etc etc. So as Wendy says, it is just being informed so as to make the best use of your hard earned entry fee money! :sweating:

When we enter shows , wether they be Open or Champ, what we are doing is asking for the judges OPINION , now some judges I want their opinion of my dogs and some judges id rather not (w00t) .

Maybe there s a judge whose opinion Id like , but when I know Im not showing the `type `of whippet that they tend to go for , I would give them a miss until I was showing a `type ` I think theyd would like . :thumbsup:

This might get the `anti` K9 people at it again but we all know sometimes the truth hurts .

Still somewhat mystified as to what difference there is between a "northern" type and a "southern "type. apart from the colour and what has the effect of introducing U.S. lines had on this divide? eg where would Airscot Ruby Rascal fit in? In addition, where does the "south"end and the "north" begin, geographically when contemplating whippets? We have had to turn to U.S. lines ( outcrossed dogs) as there is nothing in Spain where the number of whippets registered was 27 in 2004. Apparently Portugal is far better off with a number of imported Manoir de la Grenouillère whippets which do dovetail with our little bitch puppy. Nothing except that the first question was what had the dog judge had in the past and then, as often happens, one person's line of thought in a topic gives rise to another question, which we have answered!!

Some people have commented to me that I have 'northern' types but I just keep what I find aesthetically pleasing to my eye and what I consider fulfils the breed standard, are well constructed and have good movement!!!

Just to throw more worms in the pond, I dont think the North/South devide is a regional thing its more a physical thing.

We would TEND to think a northern type was of a slightly heavier build and perhaps a little longer in ribcage. I say tend because with traveling being so easy now as Stephen says we now have dogs from all over.

I would put almost all US dogs in the northan type group because the Whippets that were sent from here in the 60s 70s and had a big influence were northern type. Most of the dogs imported are coming back here they are not really totally unknown breeding.

My theory as to why? Long long ago when a whippet was just a dog, the rag racers and coursers (close pit coursing) added Staffie type terriers to the breed to give it grit and tanacity.

In the south the beautiful ladies added Italian greyhound blood to soften the look and get an elegant companion with which to course the hares on the south downland.

What this got to do with Windsor? Nuffin.

But you are asking for that persons opinion, if you dont think they are honest or they dont know enough about the breed dont go, but I would always say if you dont know what they like go and make a judgement yourself DONT listen to what anyone else says for or agaist them.

Quite feasible that idea re Iggy's and Staffies Karen. Whether its correct is another question but could be a workable proposition if someone wanted to write a paper on it - it would make very interesting reading

As for judges its not simply that the judge is EITHER dishonest OR doesn't know enough about the breed. The decision as to whether you go under a particular judge or not doesn't mean those you DON'T enter under are either dishonest or do not know enough (although there are exceptions). There are many of the top flight of judges in this country who like a particular type of whippet (whether that is Northern or Southern is irrelevant) and will place dogs of the type they prefer. If I can see in a line-up for Best of Sex that the dogs are of the same type & quality, this tells me the judge is judging to a 'type' - whether that is the same 'type' as I prefer is a different matter. So if I dont show under someone who prefers a different 'type' to the dogs I own this does not mean I think them dishonest or ignorant - all it means is that on that day at that show [SIZE=13pt]I[/SIZE] do not want to enter under them.

However there are some judges - who have given CC 's in whippets - whom I would not cross the road to enter under even if it was free!!

As an example:-

One judge I have shown under once - had a glass of whisky in one hand. patted my dog twice on the back and was watching the dogs in the next ring rather than the dog they were (supposedly) judging this was not only for my dog it happened for most of the dogs there as this person was judging more than one breed - no way would I enter under that person again.

Likewise with your last comment - if YOU don't know a judge then enter and give them a try. If they don't like your dog you dont need to go under them again.

I am really interested in this North South business. I thought it was the other way around. From my perspective, you have a rectangular shape body with wide shoulders and heavy set, and the other type is the long necked, fine boned "S" shaped whippet. I thought the finer ones would be the Northern style, not the other way :wacko:

The difference between Northern and Southern whippets is really easy

The Northern whippet responds to Aye up me`duck , cum`eyr, the Southern ` Come here sweetie ` darling :blink:

. Northern drinks out of good solid stone dishes.. the Southern , only the best china (w00t) ,

Northern whippets are happy to wear ANY collar ,( bit of od` rope ud do ) not those diamonte things those Southern softies wear :- "

The Northern can catch his own dinner , maybe the Southern can too

The Northern thinks nowt about going out wi` out a coat on , not like the soft mamby bamby Southerners .

Yep . MOST Northern whippets wouldnt be seen dead wi` a coat on (w00t)
