I Have recently discovered that I have a dog that thinks he's Chris Bonnington. Come to think of it he's got a beard too. Anyway I was away camping recently and Angus my Deerhound cross decided that the beach in a remote part of Wales where we were visiting was far less interesting than the enormous warren I'd had to drag him past (No go here, picnicing families, dogs on a lead policy etc ). My faithful companion legged it down the beach and disappeared from sight around a headland.Ok I thought, can't get far that way- he'll come back in a minute. Five minutes later no sign, so off I went to investigate. He had disappeared. I scanned all around ... and there he was at the top of the cliffs that encircled the beach! A distant grey figure galloping intently for the campsite/warren! (w00t)  After a certain amount of bawling the cunning swine stopped in his tracks and purposefully stalked his way back. I could'nt see how he got back down as he disappeared into various gullies and so on. :- " :luck:  This guy is not a worker as he's been spoiled in the past He's a rescue about two years old at most. He's keen alright but doesn't retrieve properly and is not reliably stock trained. I hasten to add that I never let him off in a dodgy area and the beach seemed safe.

Anyway, to the point, back home he loves to hunt up in woods and bushes etc but I've noticed that he goes off a lot further than my other lurchers. He goes off for maybe five, sometimes ten minutesor more before he comes back. He is ok at coming to hand when fairly close now but does not return if called when off on business. I've trained my others to come at any time, and they naturally make short forays and return often. It doesn't surprise me that Angus was "found wandering". I'd like to know just out of interest how far other people's dogs go off when on the hunt . I'm not bothered about him going off a good distance but it bothers me trying to get him back
