if i were to choose to work my dog when he reaches the correct age would it mean that he would then be a danger to my 2 cats.i have known plenty of working dogs when i was younger including lurchers,spaniels and terriors that have all lived happily with cats but what are others experiances.

If youve brought up your dog alongside the cats, no problem

I don't work Dij jas, but his reaction to rabbits and squirrels tells me he'd be up for it! Cats we meet when we are out provoke the same reaction, and i don't doubt he'd rag one if he ever caught it

But at home with my cats he's totally different .... he does play with them round the house, poking them to make them run and prancing around like a total numpty! But he never hurts them - he knows that they are part of our pack and so off limits. One of them even curls up on top of him in his bed!

I doubt, it if he has been properly socialsed with them from an early age. Mine is still in awe of the cat, who is definitely boss in this house, and this after many years of hunting various grey furries. He's usually very good with other people's cats too, is usually friendly and submissive when he meets one, but if he caught sight of one he didn't know running across open ground, I wouldn't trust him; I'm fairly sure he would give chase in that context (fortunately when this has happened I've managed to call him off, but a friend's lurchers, who were also well-socialised with cats at home, did savage a cat in such a situation, and their owner was prosecuted over the incident ).

thanks for the replies,so shouldnt need to worry about my own cats but be careful around other peoples ) that sounds ok to me and may stop the missus for going off on one :- "

this is going to sound really daft and wimpy but is it at all possible to train the dog not to actually hurt what he catches so that catch and release is possible.

Yes, I think some people do indeed train their dogs to retrieve live to hand.

thats good news although i would expect that it is very hard to try and get them to do it this way.

m8 to me i would rather have a dog bring what it catches back alive and all the dogs i have worked with do so..the main reson for this is you dont want a rabbit all brused and mangled..well i dont lol

id say stay away from rats with your dog i seen to many dogs turn out hard mouthed do to a few rat bites
