thought id start this topic up 4 a good old discussion as the last few straight opens havent had that good a turn out. why is this we all wonder? is it becoz the bends start in sept b4 the straights have even finished? the straights dont really start until the bends r finished with the exception of 1 open the she devil @ maltby why is this????

wot makes u attend an open be it bends or straights?

the new north notts derby track in chesterfield, well the n.n.w.r.f decided to hold the superleague event there so thats why we went as we actually quailfied anyway the track was so good imo we went back the following week they had a big turn out of over 70 dogs. the next 2 straights were closer to home newton aycliffe brill track only 40+ dogs then horden again close to home 4 us again fab track but poor turn out 40+ dogs. jack cadman/pup/yearlings @ blidworth we decided we wernt goin to travel 4 this one 1st of all we thought peter mitve been working, anyway prestigious event but poor turn out... why???? not too bad 4 pups/yearlings 40+

wot makes u NOT attend an open? the traveling? the track? the weight classes? does your dog injure itself out of certain traps etc

wot MAKES u ATTEND an open? the track. distance top ten points etc

Well first off its distance for us plus if I'm at work bugger all we can do about it really. I would rather try and promote our local area opens if possible than have to do 300 mile round trips if you know what i mean. We have some of the best tracks up here :D imo and we would do well to try and get something big up this neck of the woods,or at least more central to make it a tad more even for everyone to go to the bigger events. Also costs do come into it...which ever way you look at it. :b

We would love to come to more events. straights and bends but living so far down in Cornwall we have to think of not only the fuel, but also the distance we both have to drive,

it can be very tiring especially when Steve doesn't leave work until about 10.30 every night because of the shifts he works. He also has to work every other Saturday so as you

can see we need to pick our events and take all of this into consideration,.

Being new to non ped racing we've learnt a lot this year about the way some clubs run their events so we've also started to choose the ones we would rather attend if we

happen to have a spare weekend free. :))

It's also handy if they include lurcher racing as well, then my other three dogs can have a run and i don't feel so guilty when I've got to get Leia out of the cadge. :(

Two day events are best for us it makes all that driving worth while, (i'm sick of the sight of the A30) :x  di.

I think it is down to costs--preference-time traveling and fuel-with the last i would say most important --

Work often stops people from running every weekend --- injuries cost a small fortune if vet is required--

Add them all up along side the economic state the country is in its no wonder less and less attend opens ----------------

soon be all back to club racing which cant be a bad idea in my opinion--

steve

You've put it brilliantly, that's covered everything i was trying to say, di

good point about if people want to run the bends anytime just thinking though if thats the case then why does the bend season run from sept till march only? obviosuly im meaning top ten. shud it be all year round? just curious as 2 wot people think? me personally i dont like bend racing so i wud stay racing the straights but good point for those that like bend racing better. i think maybe a new topic lol im going to work soon though so some one else can start it ;)
Thought I'd post your comment here Sherry ;)

I'm not so sure whether it's worthwhile running bends and straights throughtout the year because I suspect opens (especially club ones would be at detriment)

I don't know about other people's dogs but I do personally think my own performs better when he's had a few goes club racing at whichever season it is. When I've tried to mingle the two together, I've felt he doesn't run as well. The other issue is some dogs perform at one speciality better than another and if you've got a dog that performs better on the bends / straights then your obviously going to want them running asap. I don't think it's so much owners preference to one over another, more the dogs. :D

P.S yet another good post Mr Boyd and totally agree.

just bumping this topic from 2009 to say opens werent that well attended then either just 2 years ago.

as people r talking about this im bumping this topic up originally from 2009
