Breeding for colour in Whippets is an artform.

We mated 2 Blue Brindles and the resulting pupy colours were 3 solid fawns & 1 white with 3 Blue Brindle patches.

Someone with more colour genetic knowledge than me needs to comment but if I'm not mistaken Brindle is a dominant colour(I could easily be wrong though)

Brindle is a dominant colour

We mated 2 fawn brindles and had 2 pale fawn pups, fawn brindles and blue brindles

Solid blue to fawn brindle. One fawn brindle, one fawn, one blue with a heavy white trim and three solid blues.

It's a lottery.

Don't ever breed just for colour, you will lose type and lots of other problems will follow.

well said bertha, colour should be the last consideration when breeding working dogs

IS IS NOT I INTENSTIONjust to nip this in the bud i have been with whippet 20+ year and i understand a good dog is never a bad colour

and bad dogs are created by people and not always breed to be that way i was just asking for peoples thoughts

on the matter as i know very little about breeding for colour i hope this keeps things on track on what you can expect to get

from what if you can that is thanks for all replys so far & pms please keep them coming ATB STEVE

Quite a long time ago, not naming people! I had a friend who bred totally for black.

He lost type and worst of all, bone. They ended up so fine in bone and tiny. So. do not breed totally for colour. You can predict to some extent what you might get from a mating, but be prepared for something different. lol

If it is indeed so unpredictable, it must be so exciting waiting to see what colours the pups will be!

how boring must it be to breed westies :teehee:

I thought that Claire when we bought Zoe our irish setter. There was 4 pups 2 dogs and 2 bitches we wanted a bitch so they had to check all the pups to see which were the bitches then put the dogs in a pen. You couldn't tell which was which without looking underneath (w00t) They all looed the same -red hairy and mad

It's like Christmas with the colours in Whippets ....... You can predict the colours to a degree but they don't always go the way you hoped lol :D

i love trying to second guess what will be produced but it's still just a guess, you can do all the research in the world and something will appear that really surprises you...

i put a solid blue brindle to a solid black and one of the pups appeared entirely white (w00t) not a jot of colour on him

everything tells me thats a very very unlikely result, that he'd be more likely to be cream but as he only survived a few hours and did look very white, we'll never know for sure :(

My dogs were out of a black sire and fawn bitch.

The litter consisted of one black/ white (my Roscoe) a white/ black bitch, two blue and white partis (one being my Grover) and four brindle/ white partis!

Surely though, although you can never be certain of what you will get, you can be certain of what you won't get? E.g. am I right in thinking that fawn/fawn brindle to fawn/fawn brindle could not produce black or blue?

spot on

fawn x fawn

fawn x brindle

brindle x brindle

can't theoreticaly produce blue or black pups even if the the parents of the fawn and brindles parents were black or blue

though i think i am right in thinking, that if one of the fawns was in actual fact really a cream (masking colour) then a blue or black is not impossible

My Kennett comes from a repeat mating, the bitch is a lightly brindled fawn and the sire a red with some brindle.

in the first litter all puppies were fawn apart from one dark brindle bitch, the 2nd, Kennett's, out of 9 pups - one fawn/white parti with brindle, 4 silver brindles (accurate term might be light blue brindle? they had blue noses), 3 red brindles and 1 darker brindle.

Both Brindle ....and Particolour are Recessive to a Solid Colour ...My little lad has mated many Brindle ladies ,,Not a Single Brindle puppy EVER....Particolour ladies ..about half n half for pups ..dependant on her parents parti line..Its very interesting the mix up ye can get with Whippets ...My friends little Black bitch (Solid) ..had 10 pups to a Fawn dog ..

2 Parti Blacks ..1 Red Fawn Black mask ..x 1 Fawn Parti ..1 Black dog ..2 Blue pups ..x1 Blue Fawn ..and 1 Blue Fawn parti 1 Red Fawn Parti .! ..Amazing how it all works out .x

We bred our dog ( Sire ) with our friends dog " hoping " to get a black bitch, lo and behold the second pup out was a black bitch but all the other 8 puppies were brindles, its like someone already stated it is a lottery.( Dad was Black and white mum was Fawn ).

And my other Black and white boy throws out mainly black and white pups no matter the colour of the bitch he has gone to...??

I think we should breed for purpose with pups rather than for colour but i must admit i do love Black and White partis.

The great thing about whippets is their " nature " and there is a colour or size out there for anyones liking i would look back as much in both parents lines and see if there is any dominance and then try and keep fingers and toes crossed lol.

Hope you get what you want when the time comes...
