Looking for advice plz.

So my puppy woke me up this morning as normal for her morning wee and poop. Only after returning inside with her she continued to poop, formed poops but a few of them with her last poop being softer less formed consistency but not overly watery. She's up to date with her jabs, due a worming treatment next week, we swap her puppy food but this was done over 2 weeks ago and was done gradually.

She's acting fine in herself, energetic, wants to play and happily ate her breakfast this morning (gave her half the amount to see how she does). I've read that it could be a number of things but as she's well in herself and there's no blood/mucus etc in her stools that home remedies should be OK. My only problem is my vets isn't open today so I'm in able to ask if fasting is an option at such a young age (13weeks) or how to go about feeding a bland diet?

Any advice on the matter would be greatly appreciated.

I don't think fasting her would be helpful, a bland diet is normally chicken or white fish with rice. Also, giving her only half her breakfast will be a bit of a shock for her, i would give her a little more! Keep an eye on her drinking, puppies can dehydrate more quickly than adult dogs and that would be the main risk. You could give her a little low fat live yoghurt (a teaspoonful to a dessert spoonful depending on her size) to help her gut bacteria sort themselves out.

One of the common causes of puppy diarrhoea is overfeeding. I find many feeding guides to be on the generous side so if it continues, maybe drop that a little.

I've never fasted my dog, mainly because him being him, it would cause more mental damage than feeding him would cause physical. I'd be tempted to keep her on her usual food and see how (and when) her next poo is. Sometimes hot weather can cause changes in a dog's digestion.

If her tummy is definitely iffy, I'd go the 'bland diet' route and give her boiled chicken and coked rice till it settles. I think live yoghurt can also be good.

i know, i know... "chicken & rice, chicken & rice..."
Well, some vets would say that canned plain PUMPKIN if U can get it, is far superior to rice, for dogs, esp'ly when they have a gut-upset... pumpkin puree is soothing, adds bulk, & does not pull water from the body or gut.

This vet suggests ground turkey & pumpkin puree -
Pumpkin: The Bowel-Soothing Food for GI Upsets and Diarrhea

If U can't get commercially-canned puree, brown rice is better than white rice, which is pure simple starch. // Plain baked sweet potato is also an improvement over any rice-based bland diet.

A soil based probiotic would be best. Pet Flora is a good product.

Hi all

Just a update, so after posting I gave her the rest of her breakfast. And kept a close eye on her, she wretched a couple of times around dinner time but didn't bring anything up. Fed as normal and she ate and drank as she normally would do. Had no other bouts of sicknesses or diarrhea the rest of the day. The next day all was back to normal.

Not entirely sure what was wrong with her, but it's soon passed and she's fighting fit and causing mischief again

Good to hear - puppies sometimes do pick up problems that pass virtually overnight so hopefully it was just a little episode that won't recur.
