Hey everyone,

I really need a crash course explaining about the best food for dogs. I've only had cats growing up and the past 5 years, I've gotten a lot smarter and educated myself about better food options for them. Unfortunately our cat passed away a month ago from cancer. I decided I wanted to try opening my heart up to another creature, a dog this time since I've never had one and my husband really wants one. We decided that we want to adopt a dog from the shelter. It will be a larger breed dog like a Labrador, Podenco, or shepherd mix.

I know that for cats, it's best to get food without grains, starch, vegetables, and fruits because they can't digest it well. I was wondering if it's the same with dogs or if they need any of those in their diet. Also for cats, it's better to not feed especially males a lot of fish since it can lead to some problems like Urinary Tract Infections. Is there anything similar like that, that I need to be careful with in dogs?

For Dry food, I was wondering which option would be the best. I see similar brands that I know are better for cats like Acana, Purizon, Taste of the Wild, and Applaws. I was feeding my cat Purizon which to me, looked like the second best option, the first being Orijen. I was surprised to see that Purizon was also available for dogs, but I'm not sure how well made it is for them. Which dog food brand is the best besides Orijen since unfortunately it is too pricey for me.

The last thing I was curious about is how much if any wet food should a dog eat? Is it something they need to eat every day, occasionally, or not at all? I was honestly surprised to see that they do have wet dog food available since I didn't know that dogs ate wet food and I never heard of anyone that gives their dogs it. I would always feed our cat wet food in the morning and evening along with dry food.

If wet food is good for dogs, I would appreciate some recommendations on the best one's. I see the same brands I use to feed my cat like Bozita, GranataPet, MAC's, and Animonda. I also see that they have a Taste of the Wild wet food. But I'm not sure how good those brands are for dogs. I would also appreciate recommendations on any others I didn't list.

Thanks for taking time to read this long post and for the advice.

Have a look at www.allaboutdogfood.co.uk

It is an independent dog food comparison website which scores all types of foods (dry, raw, wet) on a scale of 0 to 5. You can set filters for your dog's weight, age etc and choose to view only the foods scoring, say, 4 and above. Then you can show them listed according to daily feeding cost so you can see what gives you best value for money.

Good advice from @JoanneF, who also recommended Gentle dog food to us (www.gentledogfood.co.uk but their website seems to be down at the moment, which is unusual). Amount to feed is usually given by the manufacturers based on weight and activity level. We supplement this food with treats and our dog has the occasional other type of meal, too, so for example on Sunday, he will share our roast by having some vegetables and chicken! Just be aware that sudden changes to a dog's diet can upset its stomach, so any changes should be introduced gradually. Hope that helps!

I should add, when your dog comes to you, keep him on the same food as he has had at the rescue centre for a couple of weeks then change over gradually (in about 20% increments) to any new one you choose as sudden changes can upset his tummy.

I thought I'd posted here already! Oh well... as well as the above advice, I'd add that grain-free is also better for dogs. But do also consider raw feeding - it's reckoned by many to be the healthiest diet for dogs, and is much more straightforward than many people think.

Thank you everyone so much for all the advice! You all have been so helpful. I really appreciate it! :) I have wonderful news, we finally found the dog were going to adopt! He is 8 months old and he is a white/blondish shepherd mix. We are adopting him through a rescue organization in Spain. I wanted to adopt from a poorer country since there are always so many strays and animals in poor conditions. In the Netherlands where we live, there aren't any strays here. So I'm really happy to be adopting and rescuing him :D He's flying here this Monday and we are so excited! I decided to buy him food called Markus Mühle since I heard it's really good and a few cans of wet food as a treat once in a while.
