Hi,

My BC pup Cleo will be 8 months old on Christmas Day! She’s doing amazing, and has definitely calmed down a lot from when she was younger. I see a huge difference in her which is great. She had a dip at about 6 months old and wouldn’t listen to a word I said hahah but we’ve kept consistent and she’s getting a lot better.

However her puppy mouthing is still an issue at times. It used to be so so bad when she was younger as to be expected of a pup but then got a stage where it was a lot less and thought that stage was over. She still mouths our hands and can be quite full on with it. It’s like she gets so excited and can’t contain herself. I would have thought at this age is would be stopping but am I wrong?

Even during short training sessions everyday to keep her mind active, she’s always opening her mouth to try mouth for no reason. It’s like she’s too impatient or something. I keep them short and sweet to avoid it but she starts off doing it. Or I’ll be sitting and she’ll just come up and start going for my hands. She gets 2/3 walks everyday and we give her mental stimulation games to keep her mind active and she gets plenty sleep also. So I’m unsure why she’s still biting and mouthing.

Any tips would be great

Maybe have a look here first, then come back if you have questions or feel these techniques might not work?

Puppy biting

Eight months is still quite young. I was just about to post the thread @JoanneF has, but this one, about a slightly different issue, may also help: Jumping up/getting overexcited on walks

I do think the words 'can't help herself' are apt - she still has more energy than she can deal with, and doesn't yet have the self-control to restrain herself, but will get there as she matures.

Thanks for the reply! I had a read over the thread and can say we’ve tried it all! A Yelp doesn’t work as she gets even more excited, putting her in her crate definitely helps as she ends up falling asleep and comes back out as if nothing had happened so that works. I think maybe she is still young, it’s not all the time like it used to be so she’s maybe slowly but surely getting there with stopping.

At 8 months, a dog is very much a work in progress. Come to think of it, mine was still a work in progress at 8 years:D

Just keep on being as consistent as possible, and tell yourself that it's not that it's not worked, it just hasn't worked yet.
