Cash

I'd likely have done the same. I understand why they like electronic payment, but they should have the option for people to use real money.

That said, I'm hankering after the chip you can have implanted, so you can use your finger to pay.

It's happening more and more now, isn't it? I wonder how long it'll be before it becomes the norm.

Bamburgh Castle is cashless and there are a few other places that are as well. There are also some that only take cash.

Interesting! I've been noticing the opposite here (in the US). If you pay with a card they add a "service fee" but if you pay in cash it's a slight discount. In other words lots of establishments seem to prefer cash. I've noticed it a lot with restaurants in Charleston which can be a big tourist area. I've found myself carrying more cash than usual. I notice younger generation tend to just have their phone, put their cards on their phone and pay with the phone, don't even carry a wallet anymore!

I'm surprised it's legal in the UK to refuse to accept legal tender.
It should be illegal unless there is a very good reason
We have a local fish and chip shop that will take nothing else other than CASH for their fish and chips!!
I would support them. Though I must say that I like to pay workmen that do jobs in my house by card. If one of them said cash I'd be suspicious

Depends on the amount

If someone does a job for £40 for example, I would pay cash

We have a couple of independent greengrocers at the local shops. I'm forever spending just a couple of quid or so, looking in my purse, and asking 'Errrr... would you rather have a £20 note or card payment' They don't seem that fussed either way, to be honest.

There's a fish-and-chip shop around here that prefers cash because there's a service charge for using the machine. As they say, with cash, they get the full amount. I was in there on Friday and used cash.

And no, I wouldn't want the chip implant so I could pay with my finger.

I use a card for things like petrol , I prefer cash. It seems daft usinga card for paying a newspaper

I use a credit card for everything and pay it in full every month. This includes monthly bills like my internet/landline, my budget payment for my heating oil, and the electric bill. It just makes my budgeting so much easier if I don't have to keep track of cash.

I apply the cash back rewards back onto the card. I use two cards, one of them has quarterly 5% cash back rewards, so I use that one for the things that are 5% in the given quarter.

The only place I pay cash is at the local (legal, licensed) pot store ;). They take only cash, debit card or some other weird payment app and I don't use a debit card or payment apps. I write only one check every other month, to my garbage pick up service.

After reading this thread I've got a powerful craving for fish and chips. There's a place in town that does a pretty good platter, I might have to see if my friend who I occasionally eat lunch with will meet me there. She pays cash for everything, and usually we don't even bother to ask for separate checks, she's happy to let me put the whole thing on my cc, and she gives me her share in cash. Her idea, not mine. (she gets embarrassed for some reason if I ask for separate checks)
