What A Load Of Old Tripe!

I have to share this with you, whist fishing through the freezer looking for the bag of peas that I know is in there somewhere, I discovered a packet of tripe. My intention was to give it to them raw like they have their chicken wings but to be honest once it had defrosted I just couldn't bring myself to portion it out for them. I know I thought, cook it! Oh my goodness! It is the most foul smelling concoction ever to come out of my kitchen. I have thrown onions, garlic and even a sweet potato into it to try and disguise the smell but to now avail. Needless to say I have every window and door open in the house, we are freezing our you-know-whats off and I have two whippets sitting in front of the stove howling and then dancing round my feet when I can stomach (pardon the pun!) going anywhere near it!

The things we do for our dogs!

:x Oh dear..... Tripe does not smell marvellous raw, but cooked :x :x :x :x :x :x Hope you manage to get rid of the smell before you get hypothermia!

That story reminded me of the time I had the worst hangover ever :wacko:

Decided to give the girls a treat and cooked tripe ...........

Oh my gooodness , the smell ...........

Made me turn green :x
 
:lol: Im laughing cos ive cooked tripe by accident (defrosted for too long in the microwave and cooked it) and boy does it stink!! :x :lol: Mind you, it didnt smell as bad as when i set fire to a liver cake i was making for the dogs - and THAT was in the microwave as well! - It takes skill to be a great cook like me :lol: :-

when the breeder brought Oscar to me...he also brought a huge amount of frozen tripe...Id never fed the Barf diet before

and cooked it.... :x :x never again...my whole house smelled for a week....its so hard to get rid of the smell...

so I CAN Smypathise.... :eek:

And the moral of the story is....DON'T COOK IT!!!!

I feed my whippet frozen tripe as he was underweight when I got him- I was worried about the smell, but to be honest, I just let it defrost, keep it in a tin outside, then split it and feed it over a few days-he loves it!!!! As long as you rinse the bowls regularly ( and the packets before they go in the bin) it's no different to tinned food, so don't be put off it completely- my dog is doing well on it! :thumbsup:
 
You will get used to it,keep your freezer in a shed or garage, I used to get green tripe straight from the Cow at the local Abattoir sadly shut down, 20 pence a Tripe, I hung it outside at the side of my kennel on a butchers hook, which I fed raw, I also had a boiler outside, and in the winter would boil it up to give them a warm meal,

great stuff.

Same here, I used to get a tripe from an abattoir for £1, washed it in the stream and did the same as you Joe. Pity that's no longer possible. Tripe has got to a ridiculous price now. Boy it can hum a bit though.

when i had a boarding kennels years ago, i used to get the tripe from a friend straight from the abattoir,clean it and cook it in a huge pan! mix it with flaked maize and feed to all the 'inmates'.i never had a dog refuse it.and even the fussy eaters couldn't get enough of it. :lol:
 
I used to have whole paunches when i worked at kennels, we still fed it raw though, took hours to chop it all up!!!
 
That reminds of the time my wife and went to the abbatoir to pick up whole green tripe and this was a hot day loaded up, onto the motorway windows down it was that strong the wife had two bits of pot pouri up her nose she never took me again for tripe after that.
 
Oh heck, yes - 20, 30 years ago we used to buy green tripe for the dogs - they loved it!! But the smell ... :x :x :x :x
