How to stop him eating everything!

Help needed!

My cockapoo, Bruce, is eating anything he can get his teeth into and the last two days he’s puked up the remains on my kitchen floor. He mostly eats twigs. He chews small stones but I’m not sure he swallows them. He doesn’t eat anything from the house as such, except if the kids leave Lego or tiny toys around. Also I noticed his puke had a yellow liquid with it. I’m not sure this is normal? He seems healthy and ears three times a day. He has lots of chew toys and he spends a lot of time playing at my mums house and the kids give him more than enough attention after school.

As I am off school for 6 weeks I feel I need to nip it in the bud before he ends up really poorly.

Mainly management I'm afraid. Puppies do explore with their mouths so it is normal but as you have identified, could have serious consequences. So watch him carefully and distract him away from anything he might try to eat. Puppies do outgrow it though.

Alongside that it will be a good idea to train a 'leave it' by rewarding him with a better reward than anything he was about to pick up, and a 'drop it' to give up anything he has (again by offering something better). Particularly as he is part cocker, you need to have something better to swap as cockers can have resource guarding tendencies.

Stones/pebbles are not good for dogs to chew let alone ingest, they can damage the dogs teeth. If your dog isn't lactoseinolenrant you can "trade" the twig/stones for cheese or ham or chicken etc.

you might need to spend a couple of days just following him round and when he goes to eat something he shouldn't, take him away.
when he doesn't eat a stick or stones etc then reward him.
it will be a long process but one that you will need to manage otherwise you could end up with a very poorly dog

None off my pups have been allowed free roam in my garden without an adult just because they eat everything! But thats me, my youngest is always on a lead when needing the toliet as i like to keep a close eye on them. Go out with your pup just to watch what hes eating as they'll put anything in their mouths, mine learn drop it which im teaching Rolo at the moment . Its better than a poorly dog.
